How is he so disconnected from the reality? At the same time I know what he meant but did it in the worst way possible. Why corporations are so big that they don't recognise their bad decision. "We are not the problem, it's just you" and then swallows gamers and enshititifaction again.

I mean games you played / you are going to play.

My list looks like this for example:

What are yours?

  • Feeling clean
  • Not being exploited
  • Minimalism
  • Less power drain
  • Less data sent
  • Freedom
  • Everything works better and faster
  • I hate spying because they can
  • To be honest also because most people don't care

The only con is convenience.

Let's say just like for example like MacOS. It's awesome we have so many tools but at the same time lack of some kind of standardization can seem like nothing works and you get overwhelmed. I'm asking for people that want to support Linux or not so tech-savy people.

Wayland seems ready to me but the main problem that many programs are not configured / compiled to support it. Why is that? I know it's not easy as "Wayland support? Yes" (but in many cases adding a flag is enough but maybe it's not a perfect support). What am I missing? Even Blender says if it fails to use Wayland it will use X11.

When Wayland is detected, it is the preferred system, otherwise X11 will be used

Also XWayland has many limitations as X11 does.

I'm looking for interesting tools to automate managing packaging and configuring everything automated.

And yeah I know about NixOS but I like to distro hop and experiment so I for now know these:

  • Ansible - automating many machines, using different package names as vars and package managers.
  • Bash - the most native and compatible scripting language that can be.
  • Chezmoi - for dotfiles.

For now that's it. I'm looking forward for your suggestions!

I want to learn more about file systems from the practical point of view so I know what to expect, how to approach them and what experience positive or negative you had / have.

I found this wikipedia's comparison but I want your hands-on views.

For now my mental list is

  • NTFS - for some reason TVs on USB love these and also Windows + Linux can read and write this
  • Ext4 - solid fs with journaling but Linux specific
  • Btrfs - some modern fs with snapshot capability, Linux specific
  • xfs - servers really like these as they are performant, Linux specific
  • FAT32 - limited but recognizable everywhere
  • exFAT - like FAT32 but less recognizable and less limited

I don't want to brag but I'm one of these people that have lifetime donation. They do the amazing job.

Maybe just say why it is better:

  • No ads / subscriptions
  • No tracking
  • Free software is really fast
  • You can do many projects with Lichess
  • Clean non-cluttered UI

So, in summary, it's not hyped up (marketing), clean, no tracking, free chess.com experience.

I don't know what are the advantages' chess.com has over Lichess right now. The chess should be free.

One of the reasons why the native Linux version is better than Proton.

Asynchronous saving

Many of you might not be aware that Factorio has support for saving your game in the background, without freezing while it does so. This feature is tucked away in the hidden settings and only works on macOS and Linux. This is one great example of taking advantage of a platform's features to benefit the game, which would not be available to us if we simply went through Proton.

Asynchronous saving works by using the fork syscall to essentially duplicate the game. The primary instance - the one you interact with - continues playing, but the newly forked child runs the saving process then exits on completion. I have used it for many years and have never had issues, but the setting remains hidden because there are a few unsolved problems with it and it requires a significant amount of RAM to work.

I would love to promote this feature away from its hidden status in 2.0. If you are playing on Linux or macOS, please enable asynchronous saving (ctrl+alt+click Settings -> "The rest" -> non-blocking-saving) and report any issues you find. I am particularly interested in reproducing a seemingly random freeze that occurs at the end of the process. Thank you in advance!

Rimworld

I think you can be a DRM free copy on their website too. But damn, that game is expensive with all the DLCs.

For me, it's Factorio.

a game in which you build and maintain factories.

It even has Wayland support!

(Version 1.1.77» Fri Mar 03, 2023 3:44 pm)

Graphics

  • Added support for Wayland on Linux. To enable it, set SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland in your environment. (thanks to raiguard)

What's yours?

EDIT: Great Linux ports* not like some forced ports that barely work or don't.

The opposite of the OpenAI.

I found these: Scalpel - but no longer maintaned. PhotoRec - but I don't know how well it works with Btrfs.

Maybe you have something better.

Awesome Android Apps

AAA

Hi all,

for 2 years, sporadically, I've been adding awesome FOSS apps with the following:

Rules

  • Open Sourced
  • Free of charge (on F-Droid and source code repository releases)
  • Free as in Freedom
  • Ad-free
  • Installed and tested by me or by contributor
  • Privacy-friendly aware
  • Easy to use
  • Still in development or polished experience
  • Does not lack features compared to proprietary app
