Totally disagree, the more tech savvy can spin up their own single used instances if they want, be fully in control of their own content and participate just like anyone on any large instance bar being defederated. All for basically free

Except it’s been around for decades and put to good use but you’ve only heard of it from crypto and are referring to crypto.
It’s a small foot print for a real user and expensive for bots who are generating enmasse. It worked on Windows 98 PCs so isn’t really an issue like you describe.

There needs a new governing body similar to bitcoins, where decisions are made by admins on a democratic basis. Half yearly meetings etc.
I think decentralised IDs is a good idea, wouldn’t be too difficult to achieve, the donations should go into a larger pot and then split based on user size of instances to maintain them properly
If you choose an instance that has nsfw disabled, you can’t see those communities on lemmynsfw anyway, even via the search functions.
Instances that do have nsfw enabled needs to be careful as if one of their users goes onto an other instances community with illegal nsfw stuff, it’s cached on their servers anyway just like your browser caches the images and videos from websites. I guess the cache can be deleted on a cron job but still something I would wanna stay away from if I was a Lemmy instance admin. Defederating would be what stops this.
