I had to check what that thing is first - it doesn't seem to be anything sauna related.

Do you only have that thing, or also a proper sauna oven? If you do have an oven I'd just use that for the steam, if not you might want to start by searching data sheets from the manufacturer - I'm not sure if you'll be able to find useful tips for your unit here.

I don't have experience with the company or that sauna - though it looks pretty low on those pictures, and it seems to have two rows of benches roughly at the heights where a finnish sauna would have the first/second row, so the third one is missing.

As for the connection, you can have the cables laid inside the walls - but unless somebody thought about that and prepared a duct that'll mean cutting a deep slit along the complete route, putting the cable in, and closing the wall again - it's dirty, loud and expensive. So unless there's a good reason for putting the cables inside the wall on top is often the more sensible option.

1983 aka 40+ years old

Not really such a big surprise - my sauna has the original Helo heater from when the house was built in 1979. The timer recently started to get a bit opinionated - but other than that it's working fine.

Do you have a picture of the controls? No type sign or anything with some more specifications on one of the other sides?

[-] aard@r-sauna.fi 1 points 2 years ago

It may be as simple as a blown internal fuse - check the manual (if you don't have it - there's a decent chance you'll be able to find it online) to see if a fuse is mentioned.

That's as far as I'd recommend somebody without experience in working on electrical devices to go - if that doesn't solve the problem the most sensible way is asking an electrician (or a friend with relevant experience, if you have that) to check it out.

Do you have details about the exact material? "Plastic" doesn't really say much - plus you don't really have to worry about the melting point, but the glass transition temperature. That's the temperature at which it loses stability, which can be more than 100°C away from its melting point. Depending on the type of plastic and additives you're looking at a range of roughly 50°C to 400°C for the glass transition temperature - and I'm assuming that kind of part needs to have a relatively high rating for fire safety reasons. So, try to get the datasheet for that thing.

Is the plan to just have sauna next to the shore, or one you can take out onto the lake?

Sauna boats are quite popular here in Finland nowadays - though majority is on the inland lakes, where they don't have to deal with salt water.

Federation: Using r-sauna communities on other Lemmy instancesTBD

::: spoiler Federation: Using other communities on this instance For discovering other communities you can either use the search icon in the top bar, or check if they already exists here by selecting "All" in the list of communities:

Here you see two communities hosted on lemmy.ml being available. You can use the search function to search for other communities - which will take you to the same form as the search icon in the top bar:

Currently new communities don't tend to show up with search type "Community" - which is preselected when coming via the Community list. After changing it to all it shows up:

Now you can just follow the link and subscribe:

To get an overview of which communities exist the community browser is useful:

You can paste the link (https://beehaw.org/c/technology) into the search function - or transform it to Lemmy link syntax (!technology@beehaw.org).

Note that this search query connects to the instance hosting this community - so on overloaded instances this can be slow, or take several attempts to show a result.

Ah, I was expecting them to be there, just with inaccessible links. I'm currently checking if we can put up an archive of the content - but it's a bit complicated as reddit broke the pushshift API end of March. There might already be archives around until end of March - but not after that.

For mobile users:

A native client exists with Jerboa:

As r-sauna is not in the Jerboa instance list you'll have to type r-sauna.fi into the instance name field.

Alternatively, use the web application by installing it from the browser menu:

Work still going on, will require occasional restarts:

  • ~~add picture sharing via pict-rs~~
  • add mail server, and enable sending of status mails
  • ~~add banner images and stuff (currently broken, possibly needs pict-rs)~~
  • ~~properly test federation~~
  • ~~test mobile phone applications, and do a short guide~~

Currently we're still in restricted mode as a protest against the Reddit API-changes.

Pending further discussions in the mod team r/sauna is restricted for now to make the archive available - which was a comment request while the sub was private.

This means that you will not be able to post there, and only comment on old comments which are not yet locked. To improve discoverability any post made here on r-sauna.fi will be posted as link over at r/sauna. You can read our user guide for more details on how to sign up, and message the mods if you need help.

If you already have a Lemmy account at another instance you can follow our communities from there - posts made to other instances will also show up here. At the time of writing the communities are:

You can find more information about that in the federation section of our user guide.
