I have The Wheels of Chance, I bought it when I was a kid. Saw H. G. Wells and bought it, and it wasn't sci-fi, you just put it away. Had forgotten about it, but your comment reminded me of that. Will give it another go.

This seems like one of those cultivation/litRPG web novels. I remember reading this exact scene, but unfortunately there are so many of these novels with very similar premise, I can't recall exactly where.

Check on wuxiaworld.com, it's a site with licensed web novels, try to scroll through their Korean novel collections. I most probably either read it there or on Webtoon. Not sure.

I just finished Death Masks by Jim Butcher, 5th book of The Dresden Files. Really enjoying the series.

What about all of you? What have you been reading or listening?

Copying from the weekly thread, over at !books@lemmy.world :

Finished Summer Knight by Jim Butcher. Fourth book of The Dresden Files. Things keep getting worse, stakes keep getting higher, Harry keep going through hell. Same old, same old.

Currently Reading Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King and Owen King. It was recommended on reddit for books similar to the comic Y: The Last Man. I didn’t used to like Stephen King much before, but I can understand why. Book is 700 pages long, and first 100 or so pages were pretty much just a set up. I didn’t use to have patience for such slow books in my youth, though I am enjoying it now.

What about you guys? What have you been reading?

P.S: I have mentioned the !books@lemmy.world (and the weekly thread) a few times here. Didn't see any rules against that, and am just trying to increase engagement for books-related communities, but if there's any issue with that, I can stop doing it. (Disclaimer, I am a mod there)

Oooh. I loved Tress of the Emerald Sea. It was very refreshing style, if Yumi and the Nightmare Painter is anything similar, it's going to be great too.

Not reading anything Fantasy right now. Unless we count manga, in that case, reading JuJutsu Kaisen. Just started it. Liking it so far.

We also have a weekly thread (not a lie) at /c/books@lemmy.world. You're all welcome to join in on the discussion. It's about all books, so everything from Fantasy, sci-fi, romance, non-fiction, text books, all are welcome!

I have a distinct feeling that I once got a copy of Neuromancer from some used books sale, without knowing anything about the book, and then gave it away when I couldn't get into the book after reading couple of pages. I was pretty young then, but I can't be sure if the book was Neruomancer or some other one.

How are you liking the book?

First Law Trilogy is one of the best series that I hated 😀

I don't like grimdark, I want more of "good guy beat bad guy, and they lived happily ever after". Okay, not entirely true, but you get my point. So, while I didn't like the story, or the characters, it was a really good series. I have read the main trilogy and the standalone Best Served Cold, planning the get The Heroes sometimes. When I need a dose of grimdark.

How is Prince of Nothing? Is it also grimdark? Would you recommend for something who generally doesn't like grimdark, but would still read it if it's a really well written book?

Yeah, me too. Though I was mostly a lurker on reddit, and while lurking on lemmy for a while and not finding one, I decided to create one. A place to start gathering the people. Hopefully, we will seeing people contributing soon too. 👍

(That was me, going on a roundabout way, to encourage you to join and start posting 😀)

You just became the mod about 15 or so days ago. I thought you were here from the olden days!

Well, as long as you are taking care of any reports, I think that is well and good. As for the need to contribute content, I don't think you need to be a mod to post different things.

Do give a shout out, if you need any help.

Yeah, I have noticed, that most of the people on lemmy are pretty good. There isn't too much need to moderate the content. Ask Lemmy is probably one of the largest community on lemmy right now, it makes sense that it needs more time.

Liked the LOTR branch:

"I am yet unfamiliar with the your tropes, do your worst" -> LOTR -> "No, not that new" -> Silmarillion

I have only read first half of Dresden Files (urban fantasy series by Jim Butcher), so now getting the remaining books, and reading the series from the start.

Currently Reading book 2, Fool Moon.

Hi,

Has anyone here read Artemis Fowl series? Thinking about getting it for my kid. Was wondering if it is fine for 8-9 year old kid.

Also, any other recommendations? He loved Diary of the Wimpy Kid, but struggled to get into Harry Potter.

Thanks.
