So, I'm 17 and my Dad is an Apple fanboy. He started using Macs back in the '90s, and he's always been using their stuff. Over the years, he's managed to get my mum and her parents to ditch Android, and his parents to move on from their RAZRs. Now that everyone has iPhones, I have no hand-me-down routes. I have asked to get an Android, using my own money that I earned, but he always brings up the same arguments:

"Androids are inherently less secure than iPhones"

"We all use iPhones"

"Apple's proprietary ecosystem just works"

"I had an Android once. Once."

"Are you just trying to stop the Find My tracking? What if I need to find you?"

That last one could easily be misinterpreted. It's an emergency thing; he's not spying or anything. Don't worry.

I have an old Android in a drawer somewhere, but it's running 4.4, it isn't supported by any ROMs, and the battery barely lasts half an hour, so there's no point in trying to get it to work.

I'll also be going to university this year, so I should be able to get a cheap Pixel on eBay and flash GrapheneOS onto it soon enough.

If this goes through, we will have simultaneous genocides running in the third, second, and first worlds.

I have half a mind to crosspost this to !collapse@lemmy.ml.

Try Friendica first. If it's not your cup of tea, here are a few others:

  • Firefish
  • Mastodon
  • Akkoma
  • GNU Social
  • diaspora*
  • Hubzilla

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing this is actually Arial or Nimbus Sans or something.

Oh, yeah. More channels should do that sort of thing.

I use Zsh with the Oh My Zsh! framework, and I use a different theme depending on which subuserland I’m in, by customising ~/.zshrc. For example, I use the gentoo theme on Debian and its derivatives, agnoster on NixOS, darkblood on Arch, strug for Mageia, apple on my macOS device, aussiegeek on FreeBSD, and gallifrey on OpenBSD. Different themes helps me remember which package manager to use and which distro-specific commands will work.

I'll send some screenshots in a bit, when I boot up my PC.

I like Zsh because of its tab completion and command history. I also quite like its plugins.

Before anyone asks, I have tried Fish before, and I prefer Zsh. I have tried configuring Bash before, and I prefer Zsh. I have played with Ksh and Tcsh on BSD, and I prefer Zsh. I used PowerShell a long time ago, and I prefer Zsh.

I said in the comment that it's not free. It's still open, though, AFAIK.

I am currently a LibreWolf user, but I am also aware of Arkenfox User.js, which I am led to believe offers similar features.

Which is better?

I would if I could. In an ideal world, I'd be running postmarketOS with LibreWolf on a PINEPHONE; but that's simply not the way things are.

I have used SearXNG for a while, but I switched to LibreX after the search engine started glitching. Recently, though, LibreX has stopped returning any results. I am currently on Mojeek, but the results aren't that great.

I have also tried Qwant, but I wasn't too keen on it. Startpage will be impractical, as I use a VPN and this engine often blocks me because of it. I don't want to use Brave Search for a number of reasons. MetaGer has too many important features behind its paywall. I'm not sure about DuckDuckGo, but I could use it if there was no other option.

Any suggestions, or am I being too picky?

I would expect nothing else from the Daily Fail. That paper is a crock of shit.

I'm afraid a PWA might be the only way to go. uYou, Cercube, and Yattee are the only apps that aren't crammed full of ads, tracking and in-app purchases.
