This was always the unspoken convention between the business elites and the guys that railed against immigration and abortion. You can keep talking about it as long as you don't actually do anything about it. At some point the true believers just took over and thought they should pull the trigger on all those things.
It doesn't help that Democrats have no idea how to talk about this issue either. Banning H1B visas and forcing companies to sponsor for a full green card would probably be pretty popular with every constituency of the Democratic party (unions, liberals, recent immigrants, ...).

It's not just the corporations renting those offices, it's the politicians of downtown areas that fear a downturn in tax revenue due to more empty offices and less people getting their daily coffee/lunch/after work drinks.
And of course, if everyone's working remotely, this means it's a lot easier to find a better job without even needing to leave the house to interview, which gives employees a better bargaining position (downside is that employers will start looking at employees in lower paying countries as well).
We'll see in 4 years then if the strategy of giving the most extreme groups money and weapons will have a different result this time. If only there were past examples we could learn from.
