It's just another stealth layoff. They've calculated that x% would rather quit than move, and that probably roughly corresponds with the amount of people they want to cut. On top of that, Texas probably provides tax incentives and has a cheaper labour pool and fewer labour protections.
It's a real shame that generally lefties don't really care about or 'get' software freedom. You should be pushing for free software on all levels. In your personal life and in government. It's crazy how much power a company like Apple, Microsoft or Google has over everyone.
Where did you get the idea Tesla pays above market rates for any role? They're notorious for hiring fresh college grads and just burning them out. And that's on the software side, the people building the actual cars have it even worse.

It's not just the corporations renting those offices, it's the politicians of downtown areas that fear a downturn in tax revenue due to more empty offices and less people getting their daily coffee/lunch/after work drinks.
And of course, if everyone's working remotely, this means it's a lot easier to find a better job without even needing to leave the house to interview, which gives employees a better bargaining position (downside is that employers will start looking at employees in lower paying countries as well).

Basically: got to buy a house early as opposed to most of us ( probably with parents' help), got lucky on the stock market (because he wasn't spending everything on rent), and works as a CFO somewhere.
