Looking forward to this. I don't run a custom ROM myself but I am rooted, primarily to revoke permissions from Google apps and to back up my OS and app data as I desire.

However I'd much prefer to be able to run something like GrapheneOS on a Pixel if it meant I could run apps that are picky about Safetynet/Play Integrity, such as banking apps and the like

Not the case with ARM processors sadly, IMO they're a bit of a mess from that perspective. Proprietary blobs for hardware, unusual kernel hacks for some devices, and no device tree support so you can't just boot any image on any device. I think Windows for ARM encouraged some standardization in that regard, but for the most part looking at Android devices it's still very much the wild west.

This is one of the many reasons why Raspberry Pi ARM boards remain popular for the time being, despite there being so many other cheap alternatives available: they actually keep supporting their old boards & ensure hardware on their boards works from the get-go.

There are also some rare cases where Raspberry Pi rewrite open source implementations of Broadcom's proprietary blob drivers, in one instance for the built in CSI (optional camera)

There are also DLL mods that convert nvidia's DLSS API to AMD FSR, in which case games usually need to be fooled into thinking the GPU is made by nvidia and not AMD

Originally I watched the ad and couldn't see what was wrong with it (from the perspective of a relatively isolated software developer).

However the top comment on the Verge summed it up in a way I understood, making comparisons to the crushing of various creative devices in the ad (instruments, cameras, paints etc) and the current creative landscape in reality (game studios, music production etc).

With that in mind, the timing is pretty poor IMO and feels quite insensitive to creative individuals

Thank you all for your service! Practically every video I watch on YT nowadays has segments already completed

A per-user rate limit of some sort could have reduced the attack surface I think? Something like that would be quite a bit of dev work to implement though...

At least the situation was promptly resolved and users nuked, although R.I.P. to any smaller Lemmy servers that went down due to the massive spam wave

Basically I am using mull on android and librewolf on linux

You may prefer to skip Mozilla entirely and self host your own Firefox Sync: https://github.com/mozilla-services/syncstorage-rs

Otherwise, i've been using Firefox Sync for years and haven't had a single issue with it.

Regarding data sharing, do note that your Firefox Account email address is shared with Troy Hunt (haveibeenpwned) via the Firefox Monitor service, so Firefox can warn you if you have suffered a data breach. Deleting your account is the only way to opt out of that. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-opt-out-firefox-monitor

I personally have no issue with it as he's a well known security consultant - BUT the caveat being that he's a Microsoft regional director, you couldn't know if that data is being shared any further.

Indeed, even worse consideeing just last week they recalled a ton of vehicles because of faulty airbags, and a month ago issued another recall for 12V batteries catching fire

It's a bit crappy that manufacturers have managed to essentially force us into a subscription for our home appliances, by making self repair uneconomical and expensive, almost guaranteeing a replacement every 4-5 years.

The repair contract on my washing machine is about to run out, and that thing has been serviced many times at this point. Once for a blown mainboard, burnt out motor, and other miscellaneous issues that some of the techs haven't been able to identify, having to return again with more bits.

At least I have a spare mainboard now and the last tech fitted a brand new motor, which is way quieter than the horrifically loud original one

Don't most planes fly almost entirely on automated systems nowadays? The pilots mainly handle takeoff, landing, and monitoring the instuments if i'm not mistaken.

That said, remote controlling a plane of any kind seems like a very, very bad idea, cargo or not. If the 737 Max prevented pilots controlling the plane from the actual cockpit, I'd not like to think about what a similar plane would do in the event of a poor radio control signal and faulty instrumentation
