They could get a .ck domain instead and move to queer.as.fu.ck, no?

Create your account through old.reddit.com; when it asks you for an email, simply press "next". And, if you need an e-mail provider for some other reason, protonmail.com doesn't ask you for your phone number.

That said do you really need a reddit account?

They were women. Not minor female children.

At least accordingly to this link, the trend for dial-painters was to be teenagers. Some started as early as their fourteens. It makes sense considering the 1920s, when adult women were expected to stay at home and take care of children, not to be part of the workforce. So odds are that "radium girls" is accurate, because most of them were not adult women.

Wikipedia, and the sources that Wikipedia is relying on, are also rather consistently calling them "Radium girls". This is clearly a fixed expression, that shouldn't be decomposed like you're doing.

And even if we disregard both things above (we should not), your "small correction" boils down to "I'll vomit an «ackshyually» to boss the other user around on language usage, disregarding what they say to whine about how they say it". This is simply not contributive.

My hypothesis: Lemmy has an older userbase, and in general older people feel less of a need to express their emotions. They're busier discussing the topic than highlighting their attitude towards it.

Perhaps cultural reinforcement plays a role, too. As emoticons and emojis are less used, they feel more out of place, so people who'd use them elsewhere avoid them here.

know

Wine is wine, bread is bread. Let us not conflate lack of reasoning (stupidity) with lack of knowledge (ignorance).

Vulture capital. They don't really care about what they're buying as long as they get some profit out of it.

For the people discussing here: remember that the morality of an act depends on the act itself, the context where it happens, and the moral premises. It does not depend on how you phrase or label the act.

With that in mind: since I define arseholery as "actions or behaviour that cause more harm to someone else than they benefit the agent", and there's practically no harm being caused by OP's actions, I do not think that OP is being an arsehole.

On an individual ("you") level, the data mining is only a tiny bit concerning. Sure, Meta will hoard any sort of data that you share with the Fediverse, and then share it with its "business partners", so everyone can profile you, and then fly on circles around you, like vultures, with targetted advertisement. However:

  • The amount of data that Meta can harvest from you this way is fairly limited. Because unlike in Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp, they have no way to force you to yield more info about you than what you're comfortable with.
  • This info is already publicly available, and Meta can already profile you, with or without Threads. And regardless of being in the Fediverse or elsewhere, you should be conscious on what you're sharing.

Even then, I like Macgirvin's take on the matter, on a collective ("the Fediverse") level. It's basically telling Meta "people here ara quite hostile against data vulturing, you won't get much out of it". It helps quite a bit against the actual threat - that Meta might try to Embrace, Extend and Extinguish the Fediverse.

"Linux" has two meanings. One of them is the kernel itself; another is a collection of operating systems, that Stallman would call "GNU plus Linux" instead.

The later involves two factors. A "hard" one is the presence of the Linux kernel; but there's also two softer and fuzzier ones:

  • the operating system behaves like other OSes that the user calls "Linux". For example you're expected to have a /home/username, you can install a different DE/WM if you want, this kind of stuff.
  • the OS is open in letter and in spirit. This is ideological but ideology is damn important when dealing with Linux.

A good example of both is ChromeOS: people don't usually call it "Linux", even if it uses the Linux kernel. It's simply too atypical in behaviour, and ideologically too distant from the open source movement.

Hot take: if you want to get rid of the outrage, get rid of the stupid.

Decontextualisation might be the fuel of the outrage fire, but it only thrives in an atmosphere full of stupidity.

And by "stupidity" in this case I mean four things:

  1. Context illiteracy. Inability to retrieve info from available context, or to notice that the context is missing on first place.
  2. Assumptive behaviour. Failure to distinguish between what one knows, and what one doesn't know.
  3. Oversimplification. Resistance against complexity and subtlety.
  4. Irrelevancy. Lack of focus on what is relevant on a certain matter. Such as obsessing over "who's saying it" instead of "what is being said".

Does this remind you guys of any social network out there? It does, for me; all of the corporation-controlled ones are mostly inhabited by users like this. They were tailored for the stupid.

I don't think that you're being overzealous. Far from that - even the phrasing rubs me the wrong way; it conveys "you're something fooling itself that it has a choice. You don't - you aren't a rational human being, you're a user. Do as you're being ordered to. The continued pestering adds "You'll be bossed around until you learn to obey." to the insult.

On a lighter side I agree with Grouchy that you have options. I think that we should start giving those companies the middle finger. And frankly I think that we're better off doing so for other reasons - the data vultures love this sort of "non-confrontational on surface, but bossy upon analysis" discourse.

The issue is that this sort of rule only works against duplicates inside a community; it does nothing against duplicates across communities, that users may or may not be subscribed to. As such I think that the solution should be on the interface level.

On another, related matter: you replied twice. I think that the server itself should prevent it, as 99% of the time it's by accident.

I just deep-fried and filled a batch of the thing above. They turned out delicious, so I'm sharing here.

Here's a link for the recipe for the dough; I followed it closely, the only thing was that I subbed the butter with veg oil. The recipe yielded ~20 of them, but this depends a lot on the size that you cut them.

Recipe for the custard filling:

  • 300g sweetened condensed milk
  • 300g 20% fat milk cream
  • 300g whole milk
  • 2 eggs
  • vanilla essence
  • [optional] 1/2 tsp cornstarch

Just mix everything together until homogeneous, then heat it on low fire, while stirring constantly, until it thickens. I didn't use the cornstarch because I wanted it slightly runnier, but do add it if you like a thicker custard.

Original link.

Apparently the admins aren't too happy with the new form of protest that Reddit moderators found, since NSFW subs don't run ads. Brought to Reddit users by the zombie admin account u/ModCodeOfConduct!

The admins also removed the entire mod team of r/MildlyInteresting (original link) and replaced it with either employees or sycophants, while giving all mods a 7d suspension ban.

Reddit: "subs belong to the community!"

Also Reddit: "screw the community, this is MY PRECIOUS!"

I'm willing to bet that r/ModCoord will be eventually banned. And the ban message will say something cryptic, vague, and meaningless.

If the archive link doesn't open for you, here's the original link. A few highlights:

  • Since RR is not monetised, it'll likely survive the APIcalypse
  • The dev is still concerned about Reddit's tragetory
  • The dev is in contact with Lemmy devs.
  • "My long-term vision for RedReader is to restructure the app to more easily support other sites, including Lemmy, and perhaps others such as Tild.es and Hacker News."

[Note: the link is for the archive, to not give Reddit unnecessary traffic. Here's a link to the original.]

Apparently r/pics is protesting through malicious compliance; the subreddit is open again, but all content being shown is uninteresting pictures of... who's John ~~Galt~~ Oliver?

And the moderators decided to actually consult their community, on what they should do. You could vote on two options:

  • Upvote this comment if you want /r/Pics to feature only images of John Oliver looking sexy. As of time of archiving this option was at +51k points.
  • Upvote this comment if you want to return to normal operation. As of time of archiving this option was -8k points.

Interesting detail on how the r/pics moderators worded it:

Anyway, we – the so-called "landed gentry" – definitely want to comply with the wishes of the "royal court,"

I personally didn't realise that there is such an implication on what Pigboy said - that if he's calling the mods "landed gentry", he sees himself as a king.

EDIT: as other users are pointing out, other subs are doing the same sort of malicious compliance, so I'll share them here:

  • r/gifs (archive link, (original link). As of time of archiving it has +21k points for John Oliver gifs only, and -5k points for returning to normal
  • r/art (original link) - as of now (7:20, São Paulo time), votes are still not visible. Same as above, John Oliver vs. normal operations.
  • r/aww (archive link, original link) - +56k "to only feature John Oliver, Chiijohn, and their lookalikes bein adorable", -2.5k to return to normal.
  • r/showerthoughts (archive link, original link). Voting on the days that the subreddit should be open or closed.
