Dear NYT,

You have the power to fix this.

You could help this situation a lot by not normalizing Trump at every opportunity, and not letting your OpEd contributors and headline editors whitewash and soft-sell fascism.

Learn to use words like "lie", "liar" and "lying" when taking about Trump. Don't shy away from "rapist" or "felon”or “fascist”, either.

Failing that, firing Haberman and Stephens and all the access-journalism flunkies would be a good start.

I hate to say this, but you're probably living in a bit of a bubble. I know I was.

A lot of men, across all age ranges, tend to lean fascist. There's a lot of reasons for this, but the core problem is that progressive neoliberalism does a terrible job speaking to cis-het male anxieties, while fascism welcomes them with open arms.

It's all bullshit, of course, but at least they're being heard.

Progressive politicians really need to let the 1990s go. Third-way triangulation worked great then, but it's ineffective now.

Tribal psychology is a helluva drug.

Interesting how he can ban stuff on behalf of China, or when it's someone criticizing him, or pointing out where his jet is.

So China gets to make money while Russia does all the dirty work, with both Russia and the West falling into economic peril.

Win-win for the Chinese.

Maybe if we didn't spend the futures of the young on tax cuts for the rich?

There really is nothing like the victim complex held by a privileged person who finds out how the system treats everyone else.

Tell.me again how fascism isn't a real problem?

Twice nothing is still nothing.

In seriousness, I'm very frustrated with the typical Liberal "we promise to consider to study the possibility of starting a commission to make recommendations" style of governance, all the while continuing don't-rock-the-boat neoliberal policies that just further enrich the rich.

What galls me is that, depending on how my riding is leaning, I'll vote for the LPC candidate because the CPC is just as bad economically, and socially much worse.

[-] psvrh@lemmy.ca 57 points 10 months ago

The problem is that, should they implement electoral reform, it would mean no more Liberal majorities ever.

They're okay with swapping seats with the Conservatives every few years, but having to cooperate with the NDP every day forever, and dragging Canadian politics leftward to meet the actual needs of the electorate, is a non-starter for the Calgary and Laurentian cheque-writers that underpin both the LPC and CPC.

Maybe, just maybe, the west's political classes will realize--before its too late--that neoliberalism and funnelling the wealth of the many up to the few wasn't such a great idea?

Ah, whom I kidding, if its a choice between democracy and less money, or fascism and more money, neoliberalism will send democracy packing.
