plain old Konsole

Come on now, it's pretty active! Cf https://invent.kde.org/utilities/konsole/-/commits/master/?ref_type=HEADS 13hrs ago, a new feature weeks ago and https://konsole.kde.org/changelog.html

Look at /r/deGoogle and you will, sadly, see a lot of people that have a problem stopping.

A typical example is how services from Google, e.g Google Docs, Meet, etc do everything they can to avoid not logging in, and while having to do so, prefer to use a GMail acccount, or "at least" a Google account (which might not require a GMail email).

So... a drug no but a dependency hard to ignore for a lot of people, the same way some people feel "forced" to use WhatsApp.

You are extremely privileged if you never felt that way.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain.

I did notice CTF on the description so I imagine "escaping" it is "harder" than with containers. I recently participated to SplinterCon which included a "block-a-thon" (cf day 2 of https://splintercon.net/brussels/ ) to try to escape a limited environment, approximately simulating the limited Internet access of some political regime. It might be interesting in that context too.

Could also be interesting then to distinguish which defaults are changed compared to Docker ones or examples for which nsjail is currently preferred.

fclones https://github.com/pkolaczk/fclones looks great but I didn't use it so can't vouch for it.

Not my experience at all. Running :

  • Ubuntu 23.10
  • NVIDIA 525.147.05
  • latest Steam stable (1705108172) with latest Proton

and I have been playing "flat" and VR games with no tinkering for years now. I honestly spent at most 1h on drivers or compatibility since I bought my desktop. In fact thinking back I probably spent more time on Windows years ago than now.

I didn't try it (because I didn't have the need for it yet) but maybe https://wiki.winehq.org/Hardware#USB could help.

reMarkable, been using gen 1 then 2 for years now, runs on Linux and active dev community

less slick and much smaller community but the PineNote also works with Linux, kind of.

FWIW Monocle is open. Lynx XR is also working toward that. SimulaVR also but didn't try it.

PS: missed the thought controlled part... iMHO for this we need quite a few more years. Basic control sure but nowhere near what even the most basic keyboard could provide. I'd argue combining inputs, e.g controllers, hand tracking, mouse and keyboard, will keep on being muct more efficient unless there is a medical need for it.

PPS: had carpal tunnel, switch to all ergonomic few years ago, never looked back

I have a PinePhone/PinePhone Pro with keyboard and... it's bulky and heavy. It's like 3 phones in 1.

Maybe I'm misrepresenting the labor market and the availability of professionals working with Nix. That's also why I mentioned Ubuntu/Debian not on the basis of technical merit but "just" popularity. Now if you are suggesting that they could hire somebody working with Nix just as easily for that task, sure they could go for it.

Unless you have a pretty exotic architecture, i.e neither x86 nor ARM, then arguably Docker "should" be "enough".

If I really had such a concern I'd use a Linux phone, e.g PinePhone or PinePhone Pro, and I would program it so that unless a certain command has been ran, if it boots or stay too long (e.g 1s) without a SIM then it deletes sensitive data.
