I've tried the serenity prayer without god and I'm reading the subtle art of not giving a f*ck, but it's not enough. The book is good though.

There are still moments when people really piss me off and while I'd like that not to affect me, my first instinct is still to feel anger and to hate the jackass making my life or work difficult. Sometimes I'd like to punch him in the face.

It could be the plumber who doesn't come on the agreed day, the technician who 'repaired' a tv set, only to have the same issue the next day, a coworker who keeps yelling when I'm trying to work and even after asking him not to be loud, blatantly ignores me or coworkers who importunate me with stupid questions about my weekend.

A strategy I'm going to use now at the workplace is to ignore every non related job question from these people and only answer when they ask something job related. As for the plumber, the hate usually subsides after 2 days, but I'd like to be more resilient, not to jump to anger and hate so easily.

It's like I'm emotionally very easy to trigger.

I don't know if you agree with this sentence: A person who yells does it because he doesn't have power to modify a situation to his advantage, because he is powerless.

This is how I feel sometimes.

A proposed deal by labour prosecutors will be presented to the two firms, which could clear BYD and [its contractor] Jinjiang from an investigation.

But they could still face scrutiny from labour inspectors and from federal prosecutors who have requested the sharing of the evidence.

"Measures can be adopted in the criminal sphere," the prosecutor's office said.

China's model of taking Chinese workers to the countries where it invests has presented challenges to local employment, a priority for Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Backlash on Chinese social media

The case has triggered a rare backlash on Chinese social media against BYD, opening a discussion over worker rights.

Several internet users said living conditions for the workers in Brazil were typical of those seen at construction sites in China.

Brazilian prosecutors released videos of the workers' living quarters, which showed bunk beds without mattresses.

They said the workers laboured for excessively long hours, sometimes seven days a week, in conditions the authorities called degrading.

How did this western societal idea of how a man should act, and what emotions are appropriate to show come about? How far back in western history does this idea of limiting men’s ability to emote honestly go? And how did these ideas change over time?

It’s interesting to me because I feel like these traditional and limited roles that western society puts on men (and women) are just that traditions. That it’s just something “that we do because past generations did them.” So my curiosity is why did past generations have these societal rules in place? was there a legitimate reason for it, did having men be almost robotic even in the privacy of his home and around his family have some necessary and important reason? If so is that still necessary today?

Edit: had this posted on c/asklemmy but it was suggested this was a better place for this question.

Summary

In 2024, conservative-leaning online spaces emphasizing traditional masculinity gained mainstream influence, driven by figures like Joe Rogan and trends like the “tradwife” movement.

Platforms like X, under Elon Musk’s ownership, became hubs for anti-“woke” sentiment, while podcasting further amplified right-wing ideas.

This cultural shift mirrored Trump’s election victory and reflected backlash against progressive gender norms.

Though some view these spaces as promoting traditional values, critics warn of growing misogyny and radicalization in the “manosphere.”

The rise of such spaces highlights deepening political polarization online.

Summary

China imposed sanctions on seven U.S. and allied companies, including Raytheon Canada and Aerkomm Inc., due to recent U.S. military aid and arms sales to Taiwan, as well as provisions in the U.S. defense bill against China.

Sanctions include asset freezes and bans on business dealings in China.

This follows President Biden authorizing $571 million in military aid and $295 million in arms sales to Taiwan.

Beijing condemned the U.S. for violating agreements, interfering in domestic affairs, and increasing tensions over Taiwan, which China claims as its territory.

CCS involves siphoning off carbon dioxide (CO2) from its source, then rendering it liquid, moving it by underground pipeline, and finally injecting it deep underground in perpetuity. Pathways Alliance, representing six of Canada’s largest oil companies, proposes to pipe CO2 from up to 20 oil and gas facilities across 400 km to a geological reservoir under Alberta’s Lakeland district. This district is home to numerous communities (St. Paul, Cold Lake, Bonnyville), many farms, and eight First Nation reserves.

Despite the risks, the Alberta government and the Alberta Energy Regulator have denied the request for an environmental impact assessment made by the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and by environmental groups.

The greatest CO2 emission disaster occurred in Cameroon in 1986, as a result of a massive natural release from a volcanic lake; it killed about 1,700 people and thousands of animals.

In the USA alone, at least 75 other CO2 pipeline incidents have been reported since 2010.

However, the practice of injecting fluids deep underground is an established source of induced earthquakes which can cause structural and environmental damage. CO2 in aquifers may leach heavy metals into drinking water; this past May, a CCS project in Australia was nixed due to this risk.

Injected CO2 can and has seeped to the surface, either through natural faults, or through inadequately capped wells, common in storage areas. A high school in Wyoming had to be closed for most of the school year due to such a leak.

The Pathways Alliance CCS plan envisions its pipeline routes and storage on both private and public land. Storage sites would require close monitoring — forever. The technology for CCS storage and monitoring, especially for the long term, is immature, and research on risks to human health and safety is limited.

The industrial process of CCS requires energy, producing more emissions and thus contributes to climate change. Although CCS is presented as a technological solution to mitigate climate change, it risks becoming a distraction from the urgent need to reduce emissions at their source.

CCS gives permission to polluters to continue operating as usual, perpetuating reliance on fossil fuels rather than transitioning to cleaner alternatives and improving energy efficiency.

I spent the morning trying to work out why all the Electron applications on my desktop (vscodium, the Signal client …) were once-a-fuc•ing-gain showing me clunky, foreign file-open and file-save dialogues (presumably from gtk) instead of correctly showing KDE's dialogues via the very-cursed XDG-desktop-portal mechanism.

I'm on Gentoo. Had I, perhaps, broken something?

Nope. It's just yet another regression up-stream, in Electron:

Once again, despite knowing that nobody has support for something because that thing has not been released as stable at all, yet, the whole Electron stack follows the belief that it's perfectly OK to release a change that depends on that thing and, without it, breaks every KDE user's desktop integration.

Then they blame it on xdg-desktop-portal not having released, yet. And won't roll the change back because December is their "quiet month" – neither will they fix it nor make a work-around, seemingly.

Anyway. Writing this post has served to exhaust my ire. One day, we'll see the back of Electron for good – I can only hope!

Let it also serve as a PSA: don't bother trying to work out if you've accidentally broken something on your Linux desktop – particularly if you're on Gentoo, Arch, Slackware or other hacker-friendly distribution. It's not you. It's not your system. It's just fuc•ing Electron – again!
