The EU doesn't want to pay for NATO, that is why they don't like Trump. NATO is the US. It is a US institution. The quid pro quo is that the EU has no independent foreign policy, instead it follows American foreign policy. NATO foreign policy is American foreign policy. Germany in reality does not support the war, but they have too if they want to maintain US security benefits, that is the only thing that is unifying Europe. Europeans like the US paying for their defense, while the US likes the influence over Europe. Basically, whatever you hear from a European NATO member, it is usually a US talking point.
