The story of how a woman lost her daughter because the grandmother didn't believe that the girl's coconut allergy was real, despite years of watching the parents trying to find out the allergen so that they could stop the girl from winding up in the emergency room. The grandmother kept the kid overnight and used coconut oil on her hair; the child went into anaphylaxis and died.

The mother said that the grandmother begs her to see her other grandchildren, as they've now cut ties with her; the mom's response was, "You can come over when you bring my daughter with you."

A horrible story of how some people just believe they know better than everyone, including doctors.

I don't think that guy can feel his teeth.

I wish I had just a bit of whatever he's on. Holy shit.

Four out of five emperor penguin colonies analyzed in the Bellingshausen Sea, west of the Antarctic Peninsula, saw no chicks survive last year as the area experienced an enormous loss of sea ice, according to a new study published Thursday in the journal Nature Communications Earth & Environment.

Yellowknife residents have been ordered to begin evacuating the city immediately as wildfires approach, N.W.T. officials said Wednesday evening.

While the city is not in immediate danger, Environment Minister Shane Thompson said a "phased approach" to evacuating will allow citizens to get out safely by car or by plane.

The evacuation order says residents should leave "according to risk." People living along Ingraham Trail, in Dettah, and the Kam Lake, Grace Lake and the Engle business district in Yellowknife are considered at highest risk and are urged to leave as soon as possible.

Other residents of Yellowknife and Ndilo should leave by noon Friday.

The first thing that came to mind, oddly enough, was Blockbuster refusing to buy Netflix for the equivalent of a rat and a string to swing it with.

This is such a lovely question. Thank you for being you.

I'd say that it would be important to talk positively about the women you know. If you have a female SO, for example, tell him how smart and curious and funny she is. Make a point to be open about the respect you feel for the contributions of your female co-workers. Tell him stories about when girlfriends were clever, and so on.

Check out this article. As the author points out, "some technology that is completely unknown right now will save us!" is magical thinking. A quote:

We could call the implausible amounts of disappearing carbon in the models a kind of “carbon rapture,” magicking the pollutant away by mysterious means. It’s easy to see how those eager to believe we can be saved from climate change’s effects without much effort would want to believe in the coming carbon rapture. But the dubiousness of this joyful “tech-will-save-us” assumption is getting harder to hide.

In case you haven't read this…you should. It's an excellent resource to send to the folks you know about why you believe what you do.

It's easy to look at this from the lens of people just wanting power, but maybe it's something akin to the grief, honest grief, I felt about leaving Reddit because I had been there so long as just a user. I can't imagine how it would feel to give up control over something that I had created and curated for many years knowing that it was going to be destroyed.

But isn't that just giving Reddit more traffic and doing exactly what spez wants us to do?

I'd like to thank you for what you did.

I had been on Reddit for a similar amount of time, but I had cycled through a number of usernames during that period. So it wasn't nearly as big of a loss for me as it was for you—I appreciate the lengths you went for supporting the cause. Thank you.

I worry about this too. I've always said and thought that I feel more like a citizen of the Internet then of my country, state, or town, so its history is important to me.
