Currently the projects working name YQPkg until a good name is found. If you have suggestions, please make some at:

YQPkg - Standalone Qt Package Selector

This is a fork of the YaST Qt package selector as a standalone Qt program without any YaST dependencies. It works directly with libzypp.

It was more than just a name and brand change, such as a workflow and look similar to Photoshop. And they had plans to introduce new functionality.

[-] thingsiplay@beehaw.org 4 points 8 hours ago

The non destructive filter was already implemented and is not new in RC2. So I assume whats new is the GEGL filters new API.

According to the roadmap at https://developer.gimp.org/core/roadmap/ its not planned to change the name.

[-] thingsiplay@beehaw.org 24 points 12 hours ago

It's a mostly bug fix version of the prior release candidate. So there is not much new stuff to talk about. The only thing I want to mention is, that GIMP 3 makes me believe in Half-Life 3 again.

[-] thingsiplay@beehaw.org 2 points 13 hours ago

Why would they? While I sometimes believe that Gnome devs are childish, however I do not think they are angry or like that for making a hard fork and supporting and developing a software they do not care about anymore. If anything, that takes ton of shit against Gnome 3+ away, because people could switch to Cinnamon if they do not like Gnome's new direction. It would have been much worse for Gnome if there was no fallback option.

Realistic does not equal to good looking. In example Zelda Breath of the Wild looks good, but its hardly realistic. And if all games are very realistic, then it gets a little bit boring, as all games start to look the same. The AAA gaming industry is too much focused on lip sync, realistic faces, grass and puddles. I don't feel like getting lost in a game, but more like watching a movie. It's so boring to me (I'm looking at you Red Dead Redemption 2).

I used Simple Tabs Group before, but its been a while. And with my quick testings of the new Tab Groups, its not quite the same. For one the Tab Groups are integrated into the Tabs itself and not a separate menu. You may like it or not. Overall Simple Tabs Group has much more configuration and options.

But overall it does the basic job of this addon. The biggest plus for me is, that I do not have to install and configure a third party addon, and trust it. I predict most people would not need such an addon anymore, if they don't want to deep dive too much.

Nice. I didn't know this was a thing in Firefox. This can be already enabled in Firefox stable manually: https://www.ghacks.net/2024/12/03/how-to-enable-tab-groups-in-firefox/

  1. Open about:config
  2. Set browser.tabs.groups.enabled to true
  3. Restart
  4. Right mouse click on a Tab and click Add Tab to New Group

The bookmark bar has the "Most Visited" sites: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/bookmarks-toolbar-display-favorite-websites Looks like there is no option to restore this functionality in the address bar since it was removed 4 years ago: https://www.ghacks.net/2020/06/08/how-to-display-most-visited-pages-in-firefoxs-address-bar/

Its not the final name, if people want something different. Anyone can make suggestions at https://github.com/shundhammer/yqpkg/issues/19

I strongly disagree with the premise that there’s a “wrong” way to play retro games.

I understand your sentiment here and you are right too. What I think is, that the wording on this title here is misunderstood. Emulating (old) games without Shaders is not faithful or accurate in the looks. It looks "vastly" different and thus means it looks "wrong". I interpret the "wrong" in the title as "not faithful", instead as "bad", like this: You're Probably Emulating Retro Games Not Faithful (you need CRT Shaders for the oldschool look)

https://www.darktable.org/2024/12/darktable-5.0.0-released/ direct link to the original article from the developers. This is the second blog post I have seen today that do not link directly to the article. To be honest, I was expecting an update soon. Because the Darktable devs almost always do a big update just before Christmas. I've used it since version 1, but no longer as I do not photography anymore. This tool has some serious shit (in a positive way).

This video is a bit older now (over one year), but I just found about it. And I want to share it here, because it was very well explained, without boring stock videos or background music. It's just like a teacher would teach you, but with some enthusiasm behind it. I enjoy his videos so far.

I use YouTube in dark mode quite a while now and this was not an issue, until recently. For whatever reason the text for the comment I am writing is in black now, rather than white. Does anyone know why that is? Surely I can find some workaround by forcing the color for the domain, but it would be nicer to know the actual reason and fix the problem.

A hilarious blog post of a studio who discovered there games are pirated. They even say

Of course, I would feel very bad if anybody paid $120 for a free game

This is a reminder to user sudoedit. Especially useful for Vim and Neovim users who have a rich and personal configuration.

sudoedit /etc/fstab

is also an option. sudoedit is a short form for sudo -e. It uses the default editor set int EDITOR or VISUAL variable. The difference to sudo vim FILE or sudo nano FILE is, that sudoedit FILE will use the editor configuration from the current user instead from the root. For me this makes a huge difference, because my plugins and settings for Neovim are not used when doing sudo vim.

Man page: https://linux.die.net/man/8/sudoedit

-e' The -e (edit) option indicates that, instead of running a command, the user wishes to edit one or more files. In lieu of a command, the string "sudoedit" is used when consulting the security policy. If the user is authorized by the policy, the following steps are taken:

  1. Temporary copies are made of the files to be edited with the owner set to the invoking user.

  2. The editor specified by the policy is run to edit the temporary files. The sudoers policy uses the SUDO_EDITOR, VISUAL and EDITOR environment variables (in that order). If none of SUDO_EDITOR, VISUAL or EDITOR are set, the first program listed in the editor sudoers(5) option is used.

  3. If they have been modified, the temporary files are copied back to their original location and the temporary versions are removed.

If the specified file does not exist, it will be created. Note that unlike most commands run by sudo, the editor is run with the invoking user's environment unmodified. If, for some reason, sudo is unable to update a file with its edited version, the user will receive a warning and the edited copy will remain in a temporary file.

I started to learn how to use FLTK in Rust this year, so its fair to assume this update is specifically made for me; its so obvious. FLTK is basically a suckless toolkit for GUIs, with the goal of being small, light and standalone without being complicated. It is very small and can be compiled into the app without runtime requirements. It has most common functionality you would expect from a toolkit and should work cross platform.

Happy to see this update! Need to experiment and learn more about it soon for my first FLTK app.

Reddit seems to use Ai to analyze images, so the content can be indexed by the search. In example I searched for my name (which is also used for the my blog) to see if there are recent posts with "thingsiplay", because I saw some spike in the stats. But what I instead found is a screenshot of a comment from me made in YouTube. There is no text attached to the post or title, so it must have analyzed the content, right?

https://www.reddit.com/search/?q=thingsiplay&t=week results in

and the post is

Or did I miss something and I make myself a fool here? Does any other community software or forum do this? Is this covered in their User Agreement?

Go down to the page and click the gun. Then you can pick up every element on the page, such as graphics and text. Put it in the bin or throw it around; the window wraps on left and right side (like if it is a Portal...). I find this really cool.
