I do have the LCD one and I'll hold on to it until whenever they release the deck 2. That's what I meant. I'm actually not in a hurry.

it's not clear if we'll see SteamOS for any non-handhelds in the immediate future.

For that, you can get bazziteOS. It's a copy of it with even better performance. In case you're thinking of building a steam console. :)

[-] penquin@lemm.ee 1 points 22 hours ago

They're all sold out. Holy crap. Also, I'm holding off on buying the OLED. I want to wait for the Deck 2. They're also releasing a steam console.

I'd try reinstalling the plasma workspace and see if that fixes it. Or even the whole desktop.
For some reason, I assumed you have plasma installed

[-] penquin@lemm.ee 15 points 2 days ago

Are the missing ones Arabic, too? If so, there is a "noto sans Arabic" font and other symbol fonts that you'll need to have installed. That's really weird, though. I have Arabic everywhere and I don't have this issue. Did you uninstall any fonts by any chance?

This has something to do with what I have going on. And I do believe it's the Linux ones since the folder's name is something something Feral which is the name of the folks who made the game work on Linux I think. Also, in my steam cloud saves, I do see windows saves and Linux saves. The old saves are the Linux ones, and the saves I want to play are those Linux ones. The ones they are very new (the ones I don't want) are the windows ones. ~~So, does this mean I have the windows version installed and I will need to install the Linux ones so I can get my saves? That hinges on how to get either one.~~ scratch all of that. I'm going to uncheck the "compatibility" check box to switch to the Linux version then. Because I checked the box today because it was complaining about my Linux distro not being good enough or some shit like that.

I did turn off the cloud syn for the game and it is still not picking up my old .dat files for some reason. It still shows the 1.7% :(

Hi all, I played the shadow of the tombs raider back in August and got to about 25% of it. Today I wanted to play it and thought I'd be able to just continue, but I was wrong. First, steam was saying the game was "out of sync" so I clicked it and it said it was "up to date". Launched the game and it's almost from scratch, like 1 %, so me panik. Looked into the saved data files and they have all these .dat files with one that is a cloud one. Looked online and found a post where someone said I can download my old saves and add them to the folder. Sure enough, downloaded the .dat files for the correct date, but they have reaaaaally long names that have the paths to where they were saved then at the end of each name was the correct name (blahblahblahlinuxsomethingsave206.dat for example). Tried two ways,

One: removed the existing .dat files and replaced them with the ones I downloaded (with their long names)and launched the game. Same thing. I was watching the new ones get created and take over the old ones. Nope, still 1% in the game.

Two: same as one, but I renamed the files to match the existing ones which I removed and replaced. So, save202.dat, save206.dat, profile.dat.....etc Same thing. Am I doing this wrong? How do I go about it? I really don't want to start over on the game. I run Linux, if that makes any difference. Thank you in advance.

What are you talking about??? The previous WAS MADE BY GOOGLE. ๐Ÿ˜‚
Edit: it wasn't a workaround, it was a feature built into the YouTube app that is made by Google. I can't believe I have to explain this. Lol

[-] penquin@lemm.ee 5 points 4 days ago

This is not official and not many people (relatively speaking) know about it. My wife, for example, still uses the official YouTube app on her iPhone with all of its ads and garbage.

[-] penquin@lemm.ee 154 points 4 days ago

The fix was there, but they removed it. The dislike button. Fucking unbelievable how stupid these companies are.

[-] penquin@lemm.ee 14 points 4 days ago

Bro just released a video investigating Mr beast. Lol

[-] penquin@lemm.ee 29 points 4 days ago

At this point, anything these goons "influencers" try to sell me on is a scam, and I'll avoid it at all costs. People do insane things for money. Just watched a coffeezilla video on the CSGO gambling scam and holy shit, people are straight up heartless and have no humanity in them.

Even gamers nexus' Steve today said that they're about to start doing Linux games performance testing soon. It's happening, y'all, the year of the Linux desktop is upon us. แ••(แ›)แ•—

Edit: just wanted to clarify that Steve from GN didn't precisely say they're starting to test soon, he said they will start WHEN the steam OS releases and is adopted. Sorry about that.

Hi all,
I have all AMD and I wanted to try and set the integrated GPU for passthrough for VMs and leave the discrete one for my daily use. Is this doable? If so, how complicated would it be?
Processor: Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon vega integrated graphics card
GPU AMD RX 6600.
Thank you

Ethernet plugged in but there is no internet. I have no idea what happened. I just took a normal update like I always do and after that it was all gone. WiFi connects no problem, but there is no internet. Unplugged Ethernet and replugged it back in. Nothing. I dualboot with windows, internet works fine there, so there is no hardware issue. Went into a live environment and chrooted into it and reinstalled network manager and still not a fucking thing. Not sure what these are now. I know about the lo one, but never seen the second wired connection or the virbr0. Any idea how to get my Internet back? I really don't want to reinstall the system because of this. And btw, I even tried a hotspot from my phone and a wire tether from it and still no internet.
System is endeavour OS with KDE on Wayland.

Can he? What would he be able to take and leave? What would that do to Linux?
This question has been on my mind for a long time, but never got around to asking it.

Not sure why that is, but I have 32 GB of RAM and I would like my system to utilize it as much as possible, but as you can see in the screenshot, the system is only using 5.66 GB of the physical RAM, but swap is still being used in a high number. Is this normal? Should I lower the swappiness to lower than 10? Should I let it be? Thanks

Hi all,
I have a smaller nvme for my root and home partitions, and I wanted to upgrade to a 1TB. I have several drives on my machine and have been backing up in different ways. One way is I just copied all of my home folder and pasted it on one of the drives. Another way is I copied that folder to my NAS. I also have Pika backup setup to do automatic backups daily to one of the drives. My question is, how do I go about the process of restoring my backup with Pika? Do I reinstall the whole system, install Pika, point it at its old backup folder and have it restore? If so, what does it actually restore? Does it originally back up apps, their data and whatever I have in my home folder, then it restores all of that to the new system? Or does it only back my config files and home folder? Sorry if this is an obvious and dumb question, but I really don't want to do things from scratch since I've had this same install for a long time and I've set it up the way I like it.
Running Endeavour OS with KDE plasma. Thanks in advance.
P. S for this who wonder why I didn't separate root and home partitions since I have many drives It's a long story and it would be off topic and I don't want to bore you all with it.

I have been raging about the font rendering on Linux for years. It just sucks. Font has jagged edges and it looks very weird. I dual-boot with windows and the font there is very nice. So, I asked Claude ai to help me and it did a great job and my font is now is actually better than windows. I wanted to share it with everyone in case you have the same issue with the font on Linux.

Here it is:

  1. First, install required packages:
sudo pacman -S freetype2 cairo fontconfig

2. Install better fonts:

sudo pacman -S ttf-dejavu ttf-liberation noto-fonts ttf-roboto ttf-roboto-mono ttf-droid ttf-opensans ttf-hack ttf-fira-code

I have also installed Segoe ui and Segoe UI Variable fonts and that is what I'm using now.

3. Create or edit the font configuration file:

sudo mkdir -p /etc/fonts/conf.d

sudo nano /etc/fonts/local.conf

4. Add this configuration to local.conf:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<match target="font">
<edit name="antialias" mode="assign">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
<edit name="hinting" mode="assign">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
<edit name="hintstyle" mode="assign">
<const>hintslight</const>
</edit>
<edit name="rgba" mode="assign">
<const>rgb</const>
</edit>
<edit name="lcdfilter" mode="assign">
<const>lcddefault</const>
</edit>
<edit name="embeddedbitmap" mode="assign">
<bool>false</bool>
</edit>
<edit name="autohint" mode="assign">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<!-- Increase contrast slightly for all fonts This is not mandatory and can be commented out-->
<match target="font">
<edit name="weight" mode="assign">
<const>medium</const>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>

5. Create a file for FreeType settings:

sudo nano /etc/profile.d/freetype2.sh

6. Add these export commands (I found it there already, but it was commented out. Just removed the "#"):

export FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=40"

7. Enable subpixel rendering: (You might get a message that says "File exist", that's ok. It means it was already there)

sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/70-no-bitmaps.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/

sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/

8. Clear and regenerate font cache:

fc-cache -fv

9. For better Java application fonts:

sudo pacman -S jre-openjdk fontconfig

10. Reboot

Additional optional steps: a. For better Firefox font rendering, in about:config: Set

gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.rendering_mode

to 5 (This doesn't exist in FF. You create it, set it to "number" and give it a value of 5)

Set

gfx.webrender.all

to true

b. If you use VSCode, add to settings.json:

{
"editor.fontFamily": "'Fira Code, 'Droid Sans Mono', 'monospace'",

"editor.fontLigatures": true
}

Truly hope this helps someone. Share it with others if you think it will help them.

Thanks :)

Hi all, I've been using an RX 580 for about a year now. It's been ok, but I needed an upgrade for a little more FPS. Found this RX 6600~~XT~~ used and snagged it for $100. Are there any packages I'll need to install to make sure I get the best out of it? I know AMD support is baked into the kernel, but I remember having to install some Vulkan driver for my old GPU when I had some gaming issues. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Distro is Endeavour OS with the latest KDE plasma on Wayland.
Thank you

The app hardly ever keeps my place in the feed when I exit it and come back to it after a while, and then I'd go hunting for where I was. My phone has 16GB of RAM, so that's plenty.

Not sure if this is something voyager can do or if it's a Lemmy thing. I don't see any indicator that a post is locked when the mods lock it.
