Where do you go (thelemmy.club)

To promote youtube channels? I can't find the one I used to have.

For instance I tried to update my prime video, and Amazon tells me I have to go to the website to manage my subscriptions. So I try to go to amazon.com and Firefox, and it opens the app instead of the website. So how do I get to the website so I can manage my subscriptions?

I thought it was the cologne they spray at the store, but even clothes I have delivered from a distribution center also have a smell that is very discernibly NOT Tide detergent.

How?? What are they washing these clothes with to make them smell like that??

You always hear the phase “9 to 5” and also the song with the same name. Assuming you include 1 hour worth of breaks (30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks), you’re only working for 7 hours a day which comes up to 35 hours a week.

Now it feels like you have to work 8 hours a day (for a total of 40 hours of actual work), plus your other time off meaning you’re really there for 9 hours each day (for a total of 45 hours). Am i looking at that wrong, or did expected times change, and if so, when?

In other countries, there is a lot of unexpected "suicides", and people simply cease to exist, but in CN they usually disappear for some time and when they "reappear" again, are not interfering, commenting or criticizing anymore in any way... What actually happens in that "transition" period?

I'm genuinely curious, please provide some sources if there are some, or if this was answered somewhere else already.

They think, "Jesus was cool. I like him, and I'm gonna try to be like him." Kind of like their guiding light is what would Jesus do? But there isn't a focus on identification, recruiting others, judging others based on their religion, fear of God, fear of punishment for sinning, respect for clergy as an authority, rituals, worship, etc. Basically, just the example of Jesus' life.

What are your thoughts on the Lemmy ecosystem?

I've been trying it out for the last week. I have my own opinions, but I'd like to hear others and see if we have common ideas on what is good/bad/indifferent about the Lemmy ecosystem.

New home owner who has never had to hire a contractor before. Want to have chain link fence replaced and want to have put in white vinyl fence to match connected town home.

It is just a 40 foot length I need replaced and will need to have one gate. As I get quotes, what kind of price should I expect to pay? What's considered fair and what's considered a rip off?

EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback! I think I'm not in the right tax bracket to hire people to do this, so probably going to try to do it myself.

I'm used to the usual "remember me" text messages, but is there a reason they are trying to include the metro area in the message as well?

Because I don’t, and pretending to feels dishonest. I’ll listen if they want to talk about it, but I’m not going to act interested, and I certainly won’t ask about it on my own. What I’m trying to figure out is whether people actually care, or if they’re just playing a social game that I’m simply not interested in.

I’m probably on the autistic spectrum, which likely explains this to some extent. But that’s not an excuse - being an asshole is perfectly compatible with autism, so before dunking on me, please realise I probably agree with your criticism.

Researchers predict that by the year 2050, about half of the world's population will have myopia.

Considering the target demographic, a significant number of potential VR users suffer from myopia already. Why are there no more VR headsets with adjustable focus?

Several vendors offer replaceable lenses, or various addons to fit the glasses in, but the obvious solution used by the early cheap headsets like GearVR - adjustable distance between lenses and the display, is not being utilized for some reason.

Is it a technical problem, economical problem? Are the modern lenses somehow tuned for a specific distance?

I want tonpreface that I use exclusively Lemmy for my source for all news. I have no real social media accounts, will never be caught dead watching network or local news on TV (idc if im 37 its cartoons of gtfo lol). I use duckduckgo, Firefox for search and browser ever since I was tasked at work to keep a pulse on seo rankings. Id give cancer permission take my testicles befor ingive any fuckin company's ai permission to my data. If any of my hardware or software is using "AI" it is not at the front end or a configurable setting. What I'm building to is that I feel I put in more effort than most to not have the news I am fed influenced by anything more than what is happening in the world right now and the decisions news outlets make to report on.

Now we have that established, I can elaborate on my question. When I see reports of protesting in the US (live outside of Buffalo, NY obligatory Go Bills!), I see primarily protests in opposition to an event or thing. I get the literal definition of protest, I'm speaking of the mission people are protesting under. Protesting police brutality, protesting oil line, fuck the insurection that doesnt fall under this example but there have been other actual protests against election results (see Buffalo ~~shithead~~ I mean mayor, Byron Brown's most recent election).

Why are the so few:

Protest for improved living conditions. Protesting for higher wages (ok I admit I forgot about this one till now. I do see unions protesting for this) Protesting for lower tuition costs. Not loan forgiveness but legitimate improvements to the corrupt financial structure allowing shit like Alabama's highest paid public office position is Nick fuckin Sabin. Protest for better medical billing regulations.

Is it just the way news headlines and articles are written domestically vs globally? Is it a vernacular thing where US English grammatical structure dictates a protest must be against and never for? Or is it cultural thing where American laziness has evolved into something horrible needs to happen for action to happen (We don't become known as one of the fattest countries thanks our love of working hard). On the same note different page, is it that protest I see for better living conditions don't have the luxury to protest against something? Whether it be a question of freedom of speech, governing corruption or other similar issues.

ORRRRR do you think I am off base here and there actually isn't a difference between domestic and other counties protests?

So I've heard and seen the newest launch, and I thought for a private firm it seemed cool they were able to do it on their own, but I'm scratching my head that people are gushing about this as some hail mary.

I get the engineering required is staggering when it comes to these rocket tests, but NASA and other big space agencies have already done rocket tests and exploring bits of the moon which still astounds me to this day.

Is it because it's not a multi billion government institution? When I tell colleagues about NASA doing stuff like this yeaaaars ago they're like "Yea yea but this is different it's crazy bro"

Can anyone help me understand? Any SpaceX or Tesla fans here?

once a year I email my favorite flashlight manufacturer to ask if they've finally made a flashlight that just turns on and off when you push the button, and every year they're like, "no, but thanks so much for your feedback!"

be honest, have any of you ever used the flashing feature on your flashlight? did it actually come in handy? handy enough that I have to scroll past it every single time I want to turn my flashlight on or off

I genuinely want to understand this. Are the defense systems we are sending so advanced that we can't let anyone else operate them?

I know politics aren't allowed here, so i want to stress that I just want to know why this is happening.

How do these companies come to that conclusion? I think most people start to smell after only 24 or 48 hours max so how do these companies get 72 hours out of their testing?

Im assuming they're fudging their numbers but at what point does it become false advertisement?

Hello everyone,

This community regularly gets questions about the US elections.

This is an important topic, but if there is something that does not lack on Lemmy, it's communities to discuss about politics:

And many others: https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=politics

I am personally subscribed to this community to learn general things (the question about the viking funeral legal aspect is a good example), and US elections questions seems to always bring more political debate than knowledge sharing.

What do you all think?

See you in the comments.

Do birds get fat in fall? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I'm talking about the ones that stay in north during winter, not migratory birds. I've noticed that birds like sparrows or tits (yes yes i know funny name) look more rotund in fall, but is that actually fatness or just them fluffing up?

TBC, I don't watch or care anything about the sport. I am curious why it hasn't gone to full military tech style communications between players and augmented heads up display style interfaces. It certainly isn't due to a lack of money. It is like the ultimate battle tech. What could possibly be more American than mock battles over an inflated pig carcass with military tech shit? Like drone view of every player, in helmet view, isolated coms, and off site real time strategy. Sounds about as potentially popular as a consul or first citizen hosting naval battles in a coliseum IMO.
