Instead of having one giant jerk censoring things like on Reddit, there are instead dozens of little petty ones wanting to defederate from other instances.

This false equivalency pains me to my core. I don't really have anything to say about the rest of your comment, but ffs can people stop with this nonsense take? You're implying that the difference between centralized corporate authoritarianism and decentralized grassroots democracy is negligible.

Lemmy is free and collaborative, reddit is censored and exploitative. The fact that people consistently try to equate two opposite paradigms is just mind-boggling to me.

Interesting, thanks for the detailed reply. I haven't remembered my dreams in many years. Definitely think it's time to take an extended break, and then if I start to experience a loss of creativity maybe I will dip my toes back in eventually.

Also I mainly smoke joints/spliffs so it's really bad for my lungs, if I do start again I'll probably switch to vaping because it's more healthy.

[-] imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

I smoke too much. It's difficult for me to use in moderation. I've got shit to do and it's hard to find the motivation when I'm always high.

This is some baby back bullshit.

The judges fucked up and didn't give her the appropriate difficulty score for her routine. Her coaches realized this and challenged successfully, raising her score to win the bronze. And then they decided to revert to the original score because the coaches didn't challenge within 60 seconds? Even though there's video evidence showing that they actually did?

Ffs give her the medal already, she earned it fair and square.

Cool solution. It's great to have multiple projects in the fediverse that can experiment with different features/formats.

For those who are concerned about possible downsides, I think it's important to understand that

  • PieFed has a small userbase
  • Rimu is an active admin, so if you are attempting to combat brigading or other bad behavior and this makes it more difficult, just send them a DM and they will be happy to help out

This is a good environment to test this feature because Rimu can keep a close watch over everything. We can't become paralyzed by the hypothetical ways that bad actors might abuse new features or systems. The only way forward is through trial and error, and the fact that PieFed exists makes that process significantly faster and less disruptive.

This is an attempt to add more privacy to the fediverse. If the consequences turn out for the worse, then we can either try something else, or live with the lack of privacy. Either way, we'll be better off than having never tried anything at all.

Modern people lack an appreciation for the beauty of existence and the physical world. The most intricate and aesthetically pleasing creative achievements of the human race pale in comparison to the inherent beauty of nature.

The left lane is for passing. If you're not passing somebody, move over to the right lane. It's not that hard people

Many times. It's never as rewarding as you'd like, because the other party is rarely objective, and thus rarely acknowledges their defeat.

It's usually better to ease up when you get close to a total victory and allow the opponent to save face.

After all, no matter how objectively correct you are, if you don't change the other person's position even a little, you're just wasting time.

This sounds like something Lemmy would also really benefit from.

Threads will be implementing federation in the near future and many instances have been discussing whether they should be pre-emptively defederated to protect the fediverse. See below for our local discussion thread, which will remain active until this vote is complete.

Given that this is a time-sensitive issue and it's the holiday season, we decided to initiate the vote a few days early to make sure everyone gets a chance to vote. The vote will be tallied on Friday, December 29th.

I've been following the stats closely. There were actually several times that the active users ticked down and then ticked up the next day, the most recent being September 19/20. But I suspect that may be a statistical artifact, whereas the increase on September 28 is legit. It looks like about 1000 new accounts were created/became active on that day.

User attrition has slowed significantly in September compared to August. We should stabilize somewhere in 30,000 range for MAUs before the end of the year, which is not too shabby. We are unlikely to see another big wave of growth until the code is significantly more mature, but the current userbase is fairly well established and self sufficient.

I can't wait until we get that next wave so we can have more sports fans and humanities types, but you guys are alright for now 😅

Regarding Hexbear (hexbear.net)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works to c/main@sh.itjust.works

I didn't want to make an announcement about this but since there seems to be some confusion (to say the least), I feel that I must.

You have almost certainly started seeing posts and comments from hexbear.net users in the past day or so. Long story short, when hexbear originally federated into Lemmy a few weeks ago, they left SJW off the list of instances they wanted to federate. A few days ago, hexbear users had a vote where they agreed to add SJW to their list of federated instances.

Myself and TheDude were informed of this vote by the hexbear admins while it was in progress. We agreed that if hexbear voted in the affirmative, we would be amenable to federation and seeing how it turns out. Now, here we are.

Hexbear is a Lemmy server that was created about 3 years ago as a new home for the former users of r/chapotraphouse. CTH was banned from reddit because they were openly calling for the deaths of slave owners, which reddit considered hate speech 🙄

Hexbear is composed of leftists of all shapes and sizes, and they also have a special sensitivity to the struggles of marginalized groups, including but not limited to LGBTQ folk, the disabled, and gingers.

Some things to know about hexbear: they removed downvotes from their platform. Therefore, they tend to make a lot of comments, because the only way to respond to something you disagree with is by commenting. This can give the impression of being brigaded, but that's not necessarily the case. Also, their custom emojis are displayed very large on other instances. This is a technical issue that will eventually be fixed.

Of the major instances, Lemmy.world, lemmy.ca, feddit.de, and beehaw.org have defederated hexbear.

SJW, Lemm.ee, and lemmy.ml are still federated with hexbear.

I hope we can all get along, but obviously that's not going to be the case. I recommend that users from either server make use of the block function as necessary. More importantly, don't intentionally go to communities on the other server and attempt to antagonize them because you have a differing political stance. Some political debate is well and good, but there is a time and a place, and if you're not sure, it's probably best to keep it on your own server.

We will be banning hexbears liberally if they come in here trying to start shit, and their admins will do the same regarding our users. Pun intended.

Bottom line: we will not be defederating from hexbear in the immediate future. I personally believe they are a valuable asset to this platform, and I urge you all to give them a chance to contribute positively. If you find them annoying, just block them and/or report them; they are subject to the same rules of conduct as everyone else.

Please direct any comments and concerns to this thread, or to the Agora.

Yeah, it's not a great relationship.

During the colonial period, more than 100,000 Koreans served in the Imperial Japanese Army. The service of these Korean men was forced upon them.

Approximately 200,000 Korean children (predominantly ages 12–17) were also sent forcefully as "comfort women" at the war frontlines to serve the Imperial Japanese Army as sex slaves.

In 2013, polls reported that 94% of Koreans believe Japan "Feels no regret for its past wrongdoings," while 63% of Japanese state that Korean demands for Japanese apologies are "Incomprehensible"

Reddit has decided to run another edition of r/place in mid July for some unimaginable reason.

https://sh.itjust.works/post/1387534

It seems to me that it would be stupid to not at least attempt to advertise for Lemmy given the perfect opportunity. Many have expressed concerns about giving reddit more traffic, but a few thousand users is less than a rounding error to reddit. However, getting a few thousand more redditors to move to Lemmy would be great for us.

Hopefully I can get a few sh.itheads to help in this noble endeavor. If not, at least I tried.

Don't mean to get in the middle of the Dieselpunk challenge but I figured the people here might want to take a shot at creating a banner as well. I'm going to leave that thread open for at least a week so you guys should have time.

Please post your best submissions to the Agora thread linked above

I will try to scan both threads to get all of the candidates before we vote, but the Agora thread is the official discussion, this was just cross-posted for awareness.

The two obvious themes in my mind are gears/some sort of complex machine, or computer hardware/circuits.

As an avid Lain Iwakura enjoyer, I added that screenshot because it's awesome and I think it'd be an extremely cool banner, but there are probably much cleaner designs out there that would be more welcoming to new users. I'm sure you guys will be able to come up with some in short order.

You can look on lemmyverse.net to get a quick overview of some other instance banners.

I really don’t know how the formatting and proportions are supposed to work but I will edit that in as soon as someone clarifies.

Lemmy.world looks like this

This discussion run for at least a week, and then we can take the most upvoted submissions in this thread and put them up for an official vote.

TheDude recently upgraded the server to the most recent version of Lemmy. You'll notice significant improvements to the user interface, and hopefully the functionality is also improved. There is no official changelog yet because this version is not yet finalized, but I'll link the GitHub releases page where it should eventually appear.

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/releases

Edit: 0.18.1 is now fully released and we have upgraded to the final version. You can view the link above for the changelog.

Better suited for the main community, the Agora is mainly for official discussions and votes.

@Hanabie@sh.itjust.works

Hello,

I'm the mod of Japanese Metal. For a few days now, the community appears empty to me, both on Liftoff and my browser on my desktop. Edit: it's fine if I view it on my lemm.ee account, but that's not optimal.

What might be the cause, and how do I fix it? Anyone with a similar problem?

Thanks in advance.
