New polling results are exciting, but no one wins till the ballots are actually cast and counted!

https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/a43368900/reagan-iran-hostages/

There's proof the Reagan was a traitor who did a deal with Iran to sink Carter.

[-] Wogi@lemmy.world 53 points 2 months ago

Just like Nixon before him.

[-] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 17 points 2 months ago

Don't get me started on Nixon....

Forget about Watergate and the war crimes, what he did to screw up the economy was his greatest treason.

[-] fubbernuckin@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

What about the war on drugs?

[-] RedditWanderer@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

And is the current contender not a traitor?

The last thing dems need is to celebrate before the finish line, the deck is stacked against them.

[-] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago

Maybe we should stop talking about 'the Dems' and 'the liberals.'

At this point, there are the fascists and the anti-fascists, and anyone who is voting against Trump is a buddy of mine.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Yep. The classic October Surprise.

Not even Iran-Contra. Before that.

[-] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 9 points 2 months ago

Someone else made the joke that with Kevin Bacon you need to go six steps to find a connection between actors. With Reagan you need to go three steps maximum to get to betrayal.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

I mean, his Veep was the CIA guy. Who called the CIA the day Kennedy was shot specifically to let them know he didn’t do it.

Which . . . is weird

The main reason I don't believe in a JFK conspiracy is that they all seem to involve dozens of people. After all this time, you would think that one of them would have left a deathbed confession, if only to ensure their place in the history books.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Not to get into the JFK thing, but there have been a couple. (for what its worth i'm not buying them.) But the nature of a conspiracy involving multiple illegal organizations in the crime of the century is going to entangle stories quickly as step 1.

That aside though, the story of GHWB on that day is unsane. He supposedly accused a guy of the crime who he'd hired to be at a particular place and time that would make it seem like a legitimate accusation. The more you read about GHWB the more you wonder if he did know all about the UFOs . . .

Dec. '79 was 11 months before the election and only 1 month after the Iran hostage crisis began. A little different from 4 months before the election.

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 18 points 2 months ago

You're right, it takes time to work a crisis into your favor. My earliest realization that politics was full of shit was when people were claiming that Reagan's election that day got the hostages free.

The biggest reason this could be comparable is that her campaign is just beginning, so it is early poll time for a Harris-Trump race, even though the idea has been tossed around previously.

The point is still valid, and there's certainly other examples of statistical predictions and actual voting results being way off. Only one number matters, and it won't happen if people don't show up and vote, regardless of the barriers put in place (in America!) to prevent people from voting.

[-] Wogi@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Carter would spend almost all of 1980 hemorrhaging support as a result. By July he was at about 32%, but Reagan hadn't really gained any favor, and wouldn't until October.

[-] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago

Yeah this is less 'Polls don't matter' and more 'Events have impact.'

[-] Draegur@lemm.ee 37 points 2 months ago

Reagan was a mistake too. Every Republican from Nixon onward was a mistake. That party should be dead. Like the federalists and the whigs.

The Democrat party is ripe to split in half and be the NEXT two party system. And I'd be pleased as punch if the progressive side were the majority, especially if they might finally change us to ranked choice.

[-] PunnyName@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

The conservative party – either now as Republicans or pre-Southern Strategy Democrats – have always been terrible for the country. They continue to try and make life better for the rich, terrible for the poor, and maintain / re-establish / expand slavery.

It's never been "both sides", like many claim. It's always been the god-damned conservatives.

[-] nifty@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

The federalists had some ideas which are worth borrowing, as thought leaders I think the party was started by some interesting and forward thinking people

Let me lead with this: Fuck Reagan, all my homies hate Reagan.

Carter catches a lot of grief but not many people can explain why he was a bad president, it always seems to come down to vibes. And, I kinda get it. I don't agree, but I get it. I watched the Carter/Reagan debate and Reagan fucking demolished him, just absolutely ate him alive. Carter showed up to give a lecture, where Reagan was relatable and speaking to the viewer through the screen. Carter would have been nothing but a smoking pair of shoes by the end of one of today's shit ass spectacle debates. It's a shame, too, because I was ready to hear Carter's lectures, I wanted fo hear what this hella smart dude had to say, but then, I'm a policy nerd. It's a shame that Carter's team couldn't stop the bleeding. I think I'd like to see the alternate future where we didn't get two terms of the fucking gipper.

[-] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

it always seems to come down to vibes.

Yeah, honestly, I find Carter to not have as much of a charisma than the ex-Hollywood actor-- Ronald Reagan. People tend to overlook the importance of charisma.

Also, another factor that this post hugely ignores was the failed Iranian hostage rescue crisis in 1980. That tarnished Carter's image as the incumbent president.

[-] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago

You need to understand that after losing in Vietnam, the american psyche wasn't ready for another blow. The Iran Crisis was on the news every night. Carter couldn't escape it.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 28 points 2 months ago

That was a year before the election. Reagan spent that year deriding Carter for not getting the hostages back from Iran. While Reagan made illegal and secret deals with the Iranians to keep the hostages until after the election.

That later turned into the Iran Contra scandal.

So yeah. Not a good choice of example?

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 22 points 2 months ago

Yeah. That time there was an evil criminal former B-list celebrity working with a hostile foreign government running for President.

Totally different situation now.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Lmao, that did cross my mind.

[-] nifty@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

That’s fair, but I guess there’s something to the idea that G W Bush was elected for both terms regardless of the Iraq war issues

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

The iraq war actually made it easier for him to get reelected. Got the entire base in line. Bush demanded they believe Saddam trained AQ as part of their loyalty to the party.

I hope Reagan , Thatcher , Pinochet and all neoliberals burn in hell. Bitches of Capital. Fuck the neoliberalism

[-] queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 months ago

NeoLibs and their Fascist mutualist existence should be burning in hell.

[-] aidan@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Neoliberalism and fascism are anti-thetical

[-] chemicalwonka@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 months ago

Exactly! Fascism is the emergency lever of Capitalism

[-] queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Tell that to the NeoLib mod who doesn't understand Democrats would rather placate to fascist Republicans than give an inch to progressives.

I would but I blocked him, didn't want to waste my time on someone in the kool-aid.

His Vice President was a jigawatt!

[-] SteveFromMySpace@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 months ago

Whether you like the numbers or don’t, polls provide valuable information that only fools would ignore.

Anyone who is deciding to not vote because of what polls say don’t understand how they work.

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

and the narrative is just plain false. the polls for the previous election were accurate with 1 point difference.

they're also why Biden dropped out. if the party didn't have strong polling numbers that indicate Biden will almost definitely lose they would never be able to convince him to drop out.

that doesn't mean you should feel comfortable and not vote; as you said that's not how polls work, but more importantly Harris is neck-and-neck so there's no reason to feel comfortable to begin with.

[-] Dramaking37@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

There is no one I'd rather run up the score on than Donald Trump because he's such a miserable son of a bitch.
