So that's who the guy is. I saw the post, but had no idea what he was known for.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 96 points 1 month ago

Oh......that guy was known for something? I saw the post and just thought he was some random asshole

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 81 points 1 month ago

He's the guy known for threatening to rape boys on the internet.

[-] skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de 43 points 1 month ago

He is known for claiming to kill Osama bin Laden, but this narrows it down less than you might think

[-] zephorah@lemm.ee 103 points 1 month ago

As someone who is supposed to be there to defend American ideals, shouldn’t he be happy the kids are exercising those ideals and voting? It means he’s doing his job well. And yet this.

Rather worrisome regarding Trumps future use of the military against Americans he doesn’t like. Shows a willing level of aggression there that is disturbing.

[-] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 month ago

You say that as if the main 2 paths for Nazy SEALs is anythin but shitty book deals and working with crack-dealers

[-] dalekcaan@lemm.ee 12 points 1 month ago

That's working under the generous assumption he was there to protect American ideals, and not to fulfill his dream of shooting brown people.

[-] borari@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

He’s also apparently forgetting that the vast majority of people stomping around in the sandbox for 20 years were people around this age, doing it in 2-3 pumps over 4 year enlistments then rotating into 1st civ div and getting high as fuck bc their backs always hurt.

[-] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago

This was actually cultivated in the aughts. George W. Bush endorsed multiple secret units of Christian soldiers from the US Army and USMC to serve as Chosen do perform missions for God, which is why Spiritual Readiness was figured into the CSFF readiness assessment.

Spiritual readiness was about being a Christian Evangelical loyalist (that is the white Christian nationalist movement we're facing today). Commanders were reassigned in the Obama era, and Spiritual Readiness was revised to become more inclusive (they'd still really rather you believe in some higher power), but the units of commandos for God are still around.

I dunno what happened during Trump or since, but since Flynn is still doing Flynn things, I assume they're standing back and standing by.

[-] skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de 79 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Hand grenades are vastly superior fighters compared to Navy SEALs. When hand grenades complete their mission, they simply cease to exist, but Navy SEALs get book deals, shit takes on twitter and a podcast

[-] InverseParallax@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

When hand grenades complete their mission, they simply cease to exist,

Non-service connected condition.

SEALs get book deals

This is a conundrum...

[-] Nyoka@lemm.ee 16 points 1 month ago

In their defense, it turns out that a lot of the insanity and violent mood swings are related to brain damage from firing 10.3s indoors constantly.

But on the other hand what the fuck.

[-] skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 month ago

there's plenty of unhealthy shit in military, like TBI from arty and grenades, lead exposure from primers and crayons, the reason why there's "do not eat" written on claymores, and few others. but none of these things appear to happen that much in other units. there were attempts to disband navy seals over their rotten unit culture, but nothing of that happened yet

[-] Nyoka@lemm.ee 9 points 1 month ago

Yeah, they are sort of just the worst in JSOC (although one wonders about the CIA direct action groups). But between this shit, the Nazis in the KSK, and Australian helicopter musical-chairs, it really does seem like there's something about special operations that attracts the worst a country has to offer.

[-] DontMakeMoreBabies@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

Psychopathic traits probably help someone be an effective killer? I imagine they also probably mean someone is likely a shit stain of a person.

[-] Nyoka@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago

I know they specifically mentioned temperament in the selection section of one of the sniper manuals. Not sure about special operations.

Honestly, most special operations selection processes seem to have very little to do with the actual what most Tier 1 units actually do. CAG, for example, has a 40 mile solo nav course as part of their selection.

[-] ochi_chernye@startrek.website 3 points 1 month ago

Literally every guy I knew in 10th group that went out for CAG came back with some ankle injury from the land nav course. Didn't help my gopher-hole paranoia. Why is seemingly every stateside DZ just teeming with some kind of burrowing creatures?

No he's not getting twink harem

[-] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 month ago

I bet he'd have volunteers, and would feel better if he gave it an actual try.

But he appears too homophobic to kiss a pretty boy that loves him.

[-] nomous@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

He could even find some subby little twinks that liked calling him daddy or whatever, but he has to learn to love and accept himself first.

[-] Dkarma@lemmy.world 50 points 1 month ago

Imagine killing a terrorist and then voting for one

[-] ArbitraryValue@sh.itjust.works 36 points 1 month ago

I thought that they checked to make sure people were psychologically stable before giving them special-forces training...

[-] orvorn@slrpnk.net 46 points 1 month ago

They do! To make sure their psychologically unstable enough to be trained as special forces.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago

I feel like the army could just recruit the few who go into Fort Polk sane, then again they would have to acknowledge that base is cursed if they did that. Seriously I aint military but that gods forsaken base has popped up way too many times in my studies to not be cursed, and the worst part I think the general intelligence of that hellhole has only increased with time.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Can't be worse than Fort Cavazos...

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Eugh, point made.

[-] Vendetta9076@sh.itjust.works 29 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Sounds like you've never met a special forces guy

I was 12, on base with my dad and there was a SAS guy there for joint ops or something. He proceeded to give me a detailed account of how to turn I beams and c4 into projectiles and claimed they used said tactic in Iraq. Fucker had charts.

[-] levzzz@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago
[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

SAS is a completely different country though...

[-] Vendetta9076@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago
  1. I'm not American and 2) I know, it was some commonwealth joint ops or some shit idk. I'm also not British.
[-] skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 1 month ago

it seems like Navy SEALs specifically don't for whatever weird fucking reason, and that's how you end up with conspiracy believing dolts who want to eat twinks

[-] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

It is likely that they were stable before seal training. But decades of high stress training and dangerous missions while being fed a diet of jingist propaganda to justify the risk will have some side effects.

[-] skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

the explanation i see at the old place is as follows: navy seals were afraid of irrelevance when war moved to sandbox, so they changed their skillset (why tf does navy make a raid 1000km inland?) and loosened recruitment selection in the process. this allowed shitheads to join and over time they made navy seals deeply entrenched culture the festering ulcer it is today, which brings in more shitheads and criminals and what have you. rangers or delta force or whatever other SOF unit do not have this kind of problem including book deals. there was an incident where green beret was killed by seals because he found out about seals' money laundering. similar problems appear in canadian paras

[-] pachrist@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

Yes. Special forces are vetted with lots of testing before joining. However, once they're done doing things that make many psychologically stable people very unstable, they're released back into the general population with little to no help or followup.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

I've known several special forces guys, not the actual Special Forces (Green Berets), but Navy Seals, Rangers, and a Delta Force guy. They were all very even-keel about everything. The movies show these guys as pumped up rowdy dudes, but the guys I've actually met were all very mellow, and mild-mannered individuals. Don't get me wrong, they could throw-down when the situation required it, but you'd never know that just from talking to them. If they're anything, then I'd say sociopathic is probably the closest they'd qualify as. Although they didn't really seem to have a lack of emotions or empathy, but they were very good at compartmentalizing their emotions and empathy when needed.

[-] ochi_chernye@startrek.website 3 points 1 month ago

Most SF guys I've known have been pretty chill. Some of the young guys are dumb assholes, but that's hardly exclusive to the special forces community. They're certainly given a lot more latitude than the rank and file, and that can go to their heads. Shitheels like this are not the norm, based on my limited perception and sample size (mainly us army SF).

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 15 points 1 month ago

They need to be easy to train, goal oriented, and loyal enough. I would imagine a lot of psychopaths go into the special forces because of the requirements.

As long as you only talk about making an organic twink farm, you're good.

[-] gnutrino@programming.dev 3 points 1 month ago

They used to but the War on Terror increased the demand for SOF so much that they couldn't afford to be as picky anymore.

[-] JoYo@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

who exactly would you trust to do that successfully?

[-] taladar@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

The human equivalent of /bin/false

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm a bit over 30 and most of them look already like boys to me. I wonder how bad that must be with 50.

[-] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

So inside Mr. O'Neill's mind, he feels too femmy to be a Linux Catgirl, and while he hoped becoming a Navy SEAL and even shooting Osama Bin Laden for FBI and for the President of the United States would assure him of his manhood, he still feels his inner princess inside him growing like a kudzu and strangling out his masculinity.

And this is why he, again, a fucking Navy SEAL who has performed real operations for the United States, has to pick on civilians for who they voted for, even though defending that right IS HIS FUCKING JOB AND OATH.

O'Neill is an asshole and a bully, and I pity him for his gender dysmorphia, but there is help out there if he wants it.

A community for your defence shitposting needs

Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don't be an idiot.
