Reddit post from Mountain_Fig_9253:

Thank you for choosing United Healthcare for your healthcare needs. After a careful review of the claim submitted for emergency services on December 4, 2024, we regret to inform you that your request for coverage has been denied. Our denial is based on the following findings:

  1. Lack of Prior Authorization: Our records indicate that you failed to obtain prior authorization before seeking care for the gunshot wound to your chest. While we acknowledge the emergent nature of the situation, our policy requires that all non-preventative services, including “unexpected chest injuries,” be pre-approved through our 24/7 Prior Authorization Hotline. Unfortunately, our hotline received no such call during your ambulance transport or at any point before your admission to the emergency room.

  2. Failure to Prove Medical Necessity: The submitted documentation does not sufficiently demonstrate that treatment for a penetrating chest wound meets the definition of “medically necessary.” Our guidelines specify that life-threatening conditions must be substantiated with a second opinion from a network provider, preferably before care is rendered.

  3. Alternative Options Not Explored: Based on our retrospective analysis, alternative, more cost-effective treatment options—such as a virtual telehealth consult or at-home first aid—were not attempted prior to your emergency room visit. We understand that you were actively “bleeding out,” but this does not exempt you from exploring lower-cost care pathways.

  4. Out-of-Network Care: The emergency room where you received treatment is not within our network. While City General is geographically closer to the location of your shooting, our network partner, DiscountCare Clinic, is only 25 miles away and equipped with staplers and gauze for such injuries. Next Steps: You may file an appeal within 30 days i you believe this decision is incorrect. Appeals must include:

« A notarized letter from the attending physician, explaining why you thought you were entitled to not bleed to death while waiting for approval. « Evidence that your injuries were, in fact, serious enough to merit immediate attention, such as photos, videos, or live reenactments.

We encourage you to familarize yourself with your plan benefits and utilize in-network providers for future incidents. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our customer support team if you have questions about this Sincerely and in good health, United Healthcare P.S. Remember: Preventative care is the best care! If you'd lie, we can help you schedule your annual physical or connect you to a mindfulness seminar to prevent future traumatic injuries.

Thank you for your recent appeal regarding the denial of coverage for your emergency room visit on December 5, 2024. We have carefully reviewed the additional information you provided, including the attending physician’s notes, photographic evidence of your gunshot wound, and the security footage of the event.

After a thorough re-evaluation of your case, we regret to inform you that the original denial decision has been upheld. Our reasons for this decision are outlined below:

Insufficient Documentation Supporting Medical Necessity:

While we acknowledge the physician’s statement that your “life was in immediate danger,” we remain unconvinced that the treatment you received in the emergency room was the only appropriate course of action. Specifically, we find the decision to intubate and transfuse blood unnecessarily aggressive when other cost-effective options, such as applying firm pressure to the wound with a clean cloth, could have been attempted first.

Failure to Contact Prior Authorization Hotline: Your appeal asserts that you were “unable to call” due to being “unconscious” after sustaining the gunshot wound. While we empathize with your condition, we remind you that our Prior Authorization Hotline is available 24/7 and can be contacted by a friend, family member, or even a concerned bystander. The failure to delegate this responsibility during your medical emergency further substantiates our denial.

Out-of-Network Services: As stated previously, City General Emergency Department is not part of our network. While we understand that DiscountCare Clinic is 25 miles away and does not operate ambulances, the choice to seek care at a non-network facility remains inconsistent with your plan’s cost-saving guidelines. Our analysis indicates that driving oneself, despite injury, or calling a rideshare service might have provided a viable and more affordable alternative.

Policy Exclusions on Firearm-Related Injuries: Your plan explicitly excludes coverage for injuries resulting from “unapproved use of firearms.” As no evidence was provided to confirm the shooting was accidental or unavoidable, we are unable to overturn this aspect of the denial.

Next Steps: This decision is final. You may choose to escalate your appeal to the Independent Medical Review Board (IMRB) at your own expense. If the IMRB overturns our decision, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement minus a $5,000 “Claim Reconsideration Fee.”

We encourage you to consult our Member Handbook to better understand your plan benefits and avoid similar misunderstandings in the future. Should you find your current coverage unsatisfactory, we invite you to explore our new UNH UltraBasic plan, which offers even fewer benefits at an even lower premium.

Sincerely and in good health,

United Healthcare

P.S. Please note: Our appeals process is designed to promote proactive healthcare decision-making. While this unfortunate incident did not meet policy requirements, we commend your efforts to stay alive and wish you a speedy recovery.

[-] beansbeansbeans@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Quite literally the best take I've seen so far regarding this whole thing.

[-] metaStatic@kbin.earth 109 points 3 weeks ago

this is what happens when you replace all your unpaid mods with unqualified unpaid mods

being brigaded

it probably hit the front page you fucking bell ends, locking it with an explanation post was the call not straight up deleting.

[-] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 31 points 3 weeks ago

their front page is covered with threads from random ass subs all gloating about the dead parasite Brain Thompson.

they aint got the mod power to stop it, if they wan to shut it down, they need to shut down the website.

[-] metaStatic@kbin.earth 32 points 3 weeks ago
[-] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

i don't think this is the right one here mate: "ohh hell yes..." is proper here imho

i want reddit to shut it down so normies can see where they are posting. although, fediverse seems to be more "civil" than reddit on this but we get labelled as more radical? Amazing how lemmy world admin spend all of yesterday yeeting out all gloating threads.

[-] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

The Fediverse is more radical but Reddit is more violent

[-] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

Reddit commentary sure is raw on this and while some of it is a bit much, I do understand that this anti hero tapped something super raw within our society.

Left and right being this aligned? Never happened in my life time

[-] Tregetour@lemdro.id 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'll give the terminally online R__ditors some credit, celebrating COVID deaths plus this executive's death is consistent at least.

[-] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

Covid death eased some stress on social security so that was a silver lining

Dead CEO is 100% universal good though

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 16 points 3 weeks ago

I don't know if you noticed but the Lemmy mods are doing the same thing

[-] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

The lemmy mods

Which instance? Because you can always move to a better one with mods who aren't being bellends.

You can also call it out on !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com

EDIT: It's lemmy.world mods, citing the ToS. There's already a post on Ye Power Trippin' Bastards about it: https://lemmy.zip/post/27427367

[-] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 3 weeks ago

Lemmy.world mods you mean.

Thats not "Lemmy".

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

The most active mods on the most active instance?

[-] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

If the mods suck use a different instance.

That's part of the value of a federated platform.

[-] Pandantic@midwest.social 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

.world mods are….

Edit: if you join Midwest.social, you can see what the Hexbears are saying about it… 🫣😏

Edit2: As for instance:

Not for the easily offended! (You’ll find it funny if you disagree with the modding)Screen shot of a post by user Yuritopiaposadism [none/use name]@hexbear.net in games.hexbear.net with rhe title “LMAO People in the fallout reddits getting mad at this”. Pictured is Bryan Thompson’s mystery murderer pointing his gun with a Fallout screeen overlay saying, “You've gained Karma!” The picture is watermarked “IRL Loading Screens”.

[-] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

That's different from my fediverse

“When other’s human lives are deemed worthless, it is not surprising to have others view your life of no value as well,”

If his life was seen as of no value, he wouldn't have prompted any action. The guy who killed him clearly thought his life had negative value, prompting corrective action.

In other words: the world's a better place without you, apparently.

[-] Neurologist@mander.xyz 53 points 3 weeks ago

That aside, as a medical professional, I have to say r/medicine is such a cesspool of a subreddit, and I don’t say this lightly.

They regularly ridicule patients and specific conditions, harbour prejudiced views towards poor people and people from minority groups, and generally push pseudoscientific nonsense.

It’s a really disheartening subreddit to visit when you’ve got your patient’s best interests at heart.

Apart from that, I do agree with their view on UnitedHealth’s CEO.

[-] BarbecueCowboy@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

That sounds just like 90% of the doctors I've talked to in my life.

[-] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 37 points 3 weeks ago

Media does not know how to approach this because they don't want to put a target on their back.

Beautiful. These regime whores were always fair weather friends and looks like when fair weather is gone, now they got some journalistic integrity.

[-] Olgratin_Magmatoe@lemmy.world 24 points 3 weeks ago

Rest in piss

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 15 points 3 weeks ago

Is "torched" the new "slammed"? How is it people can't sound like normal humans when writing a headline!?

[-] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

My first language isn't English, and as I was trying to understand the headline, I thought "torch dead" might be an expression meaning, burning alive with torches or similar. So I was reading "reddit mods delete thread as doctors burn CEO alive". The event described sounded much more brutal than it really was.

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

My only language is English and I thought the exact same thing!

[-] granolabar@kbin.melroy.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

You are reading it correct but you are missing is the cultural context of how headlines in US are drafted by journalist and wording is reflecting of some custom or narrative.

"slammed" specifically has a connotation of a certain type of a journalist that is now regularly mocked on social media. Commenter above merely making a joke at their expense here.

[-] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I'm aware of the mockery for "slam", thanks.

Now that you are telling I'm reading it correct, I understand it must be a figurative sense of "torch". I had taken it literally.

In times like these we can probably turn to the WWE to draw upon more creative synonyms.

also doctors:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Salary/comments/1h0ej7f/radiologist_i_work_1718_weeks_a_year/

Hi everyone I'm 3 years out from training. 34 year old and I work one week of nights and then get two weeks off. I can read from home and occasional will go into the hospital for procedures. Partners in the group make 1.5 million and none of them work nights. One of the other night guys work from home in Hawaii. I get paid twice a month. I made 100k less the year before. On track for 850k this year. Partnership track 5 years. AMA

Their "gross pay" for those 18 weeks: $777,000.00

Fuck the "doctor outrage".

[-] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

that's deff some top salary range, what's median for quacks? 200-300K?

[-] humble_pete_digger@lemm.ee 10 points 3 weeks ago

Reddit is so unusable now. Even Firefox and ublock - I think they intentionally slow it down.

[-] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

They also block all VPN users, it's horrible. Redlib is the only sane option to access this shithole.

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago

Israeli government policies cause the deaths of tents of thousands men, women, and children. It's rightfully called a genocide

Medical insurance policies cause the needless deaths and bankruptcies of tens of thousands of men, women, and children. What is this called?
