I dunno, but he should drink more water.

Obviously cars need at least 3x more room than they actually use because it makes them feel safer driving at higher speeds and great cities are made when cars are able to drive as fast as possible.

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago

And look how much space that cars which aren't even in use take up. Like 99% of the time they just sit there.

And it's not even free space. Every inch given to cars is taken away from people and green space.

We need to rebalance the space we all live in.

And many times, those drivers have to pay $0 in parking fees to park there. Yet the guy in the tent is asked to move along because they aren't contributing

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

No kidding!

Around here, not only is parking free, but drivers can't even be bothered to use free parking! Instead, they'll park (illegally) in bike lanes, because No Enforcement™ 🤫

Why does the tree get a trampoline?

Looks like the sides are on street parking which is better than huge lots as you have an argument to restrict it to residents as it's in lower supply, and also serves to reduce the speed of cars on the road, so actually better than being a 4 lane stroad

?? I love paying for people to store their (one very specific property) for free.

Just shrink the road.

This place is too full of single minded hate to have a real convo, it's gotten silly.

[-] lgsp@feddit.it 24 points 1 week ago

The space close to crossroads should not be dedicated to parking, because parked cars limit visibility of incoming cars. The solution proposed by the maker of the video is much more livable and much less dangerous.

The technique is sometimes called daylighting, and you can find more information about it here

[-] MacroCyclo@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

TIL about daylighting, thanks!

[-] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz 14 points 1 week ago

Parking is a menace and should be removed as much as possible

[-] 1rre@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

Off-street parking is worse than on-street as it requires crossing cycle lanes and sidewalks, usually without traffic controls, so increases the interactions between other road users and cars

[-] Aufgehtsabgehts@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

On-street parking can be very dangerous for bicyclerider (doorings accidents), the people getting out of their car on the street and for people wanting to cross the road, as they can't be seen well between parked cars - espacially children. And it takes space away that could be used for real bike lanes and wide enough side walks.

If people want to own a car, they should park it on their property. If they don't have space for it, they shouldn't (have to) own a car.

Charging the residents to park on the side doesn't work well, it is often way to cheap, compared to the luxury car owners get.

[-] Xavienth@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 week ago

No parking altogether discourages car ownership. Unfair to the people who live there to change it aspirationally, but if you provide other transportation options that are better than driving, then you don't need it.

[-] huginn@feddit.it 10 points 1 week ago

No free parking.

[-] LovesTha@floss.social 2 points 1 week ago

@1rre @lgsp Smaller road reduces speed very effectively too.

And anywhere built that densly definitely has the density for PT to be everyone's primary mode of powered transport.

This community exists for the following reasons:

Rules

  1. Be nice to each other. Being aggressive or inflammatory towards other users will get you banned. Name calling or obvious trolling falls under that. Hate cars, hate the system, but not people. While some drivers definitely deserve some hate, most of them didn't choose car-centric life out of free will.

  2. No bigotry or hate. Racism, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, homophobia, chauvinism, fat-shaming, body-shaming, stigmatization of people experiencing homeless or substance users, etc. are not tolerated. Don't use slurs. You can laugh at someone's fragile masculinity without associating it with their body. The correlation between car-culture and body weight is not an excuse for fat-shaming.

  3. Stay on-topic. Submissions should be on-topic to the externalities of car culture in urban development and communities globally. Posting about alternatives to cars and car culture is fine. Don't post literal car fucking.

  4. No traffic violence. Do not post depictions of traffic violence. NSFW or NSFL posts are not allowed. Gawking at crashes is not allowed. Be respectful to people who are a victim of traffic violence or otherwise traumatized by it. News articles about crashes and statistics about traffic violence are allowed. Glorifying traffic violence will get you banned.

  5. No reposts. Before sharing, check if your post isn't a repost. Reposts that add something new are fine. Reposts that are sharing content from somewhere else are fine too.

  6. No misinformation. Masks and vaccines save lives during a pandemic, climate change is real and anthropogenic - and denial of these and other established facts will get you banned. False or highly speculative titles will get your post deleted.

  7. No harassment. Posts that (may) cause harassment, dogpiling or brigading, intentionally or not, will be removed. Please do not post screenshots containing uncensored usernames. Actual harassment, dogpiling or brigading is a bannable offence.

Please report posts and comments that violate our rules.
