Summary

Donald Trump has rejected a bipartisan stopgap funding plan to prevent a government shutdown, calling for a slimmer bill and immediate action on raising the debt ceiling.

With funding set to expire in two days, Trump and JD Vance urged Republicans to “call Democrats’ bluff” on shutdown threats, warning GOP lawmakers of political consequences if they don’t align.

The bill, criticized for its add-ons, faces pushback from conservatives and some Democrats, while others warn that excluding disaster relief and other provisions could worsen the crisis.

Wait, isn’t he like not sworn in yet?

[-] fluxion@lemmy.world 84 points 1 week ago

Elon Musk will actually never be sworn in but somehow he is openly running the country by beating people over the head with bags of money

Someone call the Mario Bros.

He told congress to kill a border bill before he'd even been elected. It doesn't matter that he doesn't officially have power when the Republicans are afraid of him.

[-] Natanael@slrpnk.net 27 points 1 week ago

He has enough Republicans in congress to be able to mess things up by pressuring them

It's great watching someone who isn't even president yet deciding things after four years of "The president doesn't control congress and can't decide anything on his own."

As far as I can tell, Biden didn't control Congress. Senator Manchin, for example, effectively watered down the Build Back Better Act that Biden advocated for — and, to my knowledge, Biden never threatened him or any other Democratic members of Congress who resisted his legislative plans with “political consequences”, as Trump is doing to Republican House representatives in this instance.

In establishing himself as the Republican presidential candidate for the 2024 election, Trump seems to me to have set up a sort of cult of personality within the party such that Republicans either fall in line or out of favor.

Biden didn't have Musk money as his enforcer. Musk publicly said if you don't follow Trump, he'll spend millions to make sure you lose the next election.

That's the Whip's job

The Republicans are terrified of saying no to him even when he's not in office.

The press behaves as if he's already in office.

It's so stupid that the US still acts like electoral results are delivered on horseback. The switch could happen two weeks after the results are in.

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 56 points 1 week ago

It's so much easier to understand his actions when you accept that his orders from Putin is to run things badly. Never trust a man that eats secret messages.

The dysfunction is the goal. Russia specifically chose these people for their incompetence.

Russia specifically purchased these people for their ability to follow orders.

It's their circus and their monkeys, now. Let them shut down the government and own the consequences. Letting Trump and his GOP sycophants destroy the US economy may be the best way to save the country in the long run.

[-] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

He destroyed the economy last time and look at where we are.

This time he has made it clear that he's for sale. He's put oligarchs with grievances in charge of departments with the intention of dismantling those departments. None of this benefits the American people. The wealthy are going to destroy and loot and the people will suffer. This is how capitalism ends. The wealthy make their play and the people rise up and murder them and take their money back.

It's a good thing The Wealthy don't know that this is coming, otherwise they'd stir shit up and cause multiple wars around the globe that will eventually pull in every other nation, so that the people will start focusing on winning wars and not focusing on why we're fighting them in the first place. I'd hate to see what would happen if The Wealthy knew what they were doing.

Ah, an optimist.

Trump wants to increase the debt ceiling, not so they can finance government projects, but so he can raid the taxpayer coffers to pay his backers.

Seems a lot of people forgot about about Trump 1.0 chaos.
