Russia's new intermediate-range ballistic missile, the Oreshnik, recently fired at Ukraine, was developed using advanced manufacturing equipment from Western companies, despite sanctions, The Financial Times reported on Dec. 27.

Sanctions don't make it impossible to get stuff. They make it much harder, slower and more expensive to get stuff. If Russia is paying through the nose for components, that means you can make 3 missiles instead 20 for the same money, so it's working.

Russia is circumventing sanctions. Those CNC controllers are common in high end manufacturing equipment including Chinese ones. Sucks that it happens, but it is not surprising that Russia uses its secret service to obtain things like that.

I'm gonna assume this is about sanctions on precision-machined bearings or something, not computer chips, because the 3018 CNC in my house runs on basically a $2 microcontroller and there's gotta be a limit on how much more complicated the controller of even a high-end machine could possibly be.
