My appreciated bird is for the kookaburras. Particularly the one that stole bacon rind from the camp-fire and proceeded to bash it against the rocks a metre from my eyes before taking off to a nearby tree to enjoy. It then watched me eat my breakfast.

We have a family of Kookas who live in the bush across the road. Their evening chatter and laughs is the best way to end a day.

my contribution to bird day from the beach just now:

I guess my apartment isn't so poorly insulated. Just got home after a nice lunch out thinking I'd need to blast the AC, but I've just got the fan on me and I'm pretty comfortable!

It looks like the cool change isn't coming through until morning, like 7am. If your house is hot it could be a good day to check out your local library or see a movie or three.

Keep those fluids up! It's already 37C here at midday.

Birds. After cleaning and filling up the bird bath yesterday, it wasn't used :( Gonna try again today don't give up!

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 7 points 3 days ago

Holy shit, I had the air con on for a few hours yesterday and used 10kwh more electricity than usual

$5 just to keep the inside temp below 30 😐

Maybe that's perfectly average and expected, but that's the most electricity I've ever used in a day (at least while I've been paying the bill). Do split systems use that much?

It's already 31 inside, I don't really feel like I've got much other option but to turn it back on, but the moment it's bearable it goes straight back off :/

I forgot to post something bird related! My tribute today is to the Maggies and ravens in my street, I love watching their morning antics and their little society. And the birds which raised a baby in a nest they made in the back of my staghorn. Also the pigeon that lives in the supermarket. Smart bird, it's always cool in there and there's plenty of food. They've tried to shoo it out but it's way too clever, bobs under the aisle into the next aisle away from its pursuers lol. There are black and yellow cockies that come every year exactly at the time the pine trees in the local park have young pinecones. If you're not careful you'll end up copping a projectile from above.

My last.fm 2024 recap thing just arrived. It's less accurate than Spotify, because every now and then it'll crap out and decide to just not count an entire week's worth of music, or I'll listen to something 5 times and it only counts it twice

But anyway, some interesting stuff fin there:

recapSome things are basically the same as the Spotify rewind. My top artists are hilltop hoods, flume, ABBA, the Chainsmokers, and the Rubens. But I listened to a total of 1,161 individual artists last year (23% of those were new to me)

2,165 albums (top were Walking under stars, loose, skin, under the sun, and colour by numbers), 31% of those albums were new to me

2,341 tracks, 30% were new to me. Top 5 were Cosby Sweater, Never Be Like You, To Her Door, Karma Chameleon, and Nothing Matters (bit of a depresso song. Was very into it earlier this year)

For the more interesting stuff:

My busiest listening day is Friday, and my most active hour is 3pm, but really I'm mostly listening to stuff between noon and midnight. But ivemoustened to something in every single hour of the day!

Most of my music is, predictably, from the 2010s. My top album from the 2010s was Walking Under Stars by the hilltops. Next up is the 2000s, my top album from the 2000s was Loose by Nelly Furtado (♥️ man eater), and next up is the 80s. My top album from the 80s was Under the Sun by Paul Kelly

I've listened to people from a few places around the world. My top artist from Nigeria was Rema, South Africa was Tyla, Russia was t.A.T.u. Ireland was Enya, and Argentina was Pez

I listened to at least 61 days and 7 hours of music (up 6% on last year), an average of 64 songs per day, and my biggest listening day was November 25th when I listened to at least 225 songs!

I'm a top 0.13% fan of Hilltop Hoods, and a top 0.02% fan of Cosby Sweater lol

Top 11% of listeners on LFM. And they refer to me as a nostalgic, discerning, adventurer

I'm also apparently the 60th top listener of the Rubens, and the 4th top listener of Under the Sun by Paul Kelly, and more specifically, the third top listener of To Her Door. That's crazy!

Suburban park ibis from the other day.

Only showed up about a year ago. Spreading from the Springvale necropolis lake colony.

I still have not made the custard or finished the big kitchen clean.

Money/gardenHowever since the big green shed wants to charge me more in delivery fees than I would pay for the actual potting mix - I bit the bullet, yanked out as much of the grass from a small spot as I could and dug out a hole to plant 1 (one) of the rapidly embiggening golden nugget pumpkin seedlings. We’ll see if I’m able to do any more (and if it lives) but I planted that one.

Yes, I shouldn’t have done that, I risked really injuring myself and will be exhausted and hurting for days. But my thriftiness lent me strength.

I also took the chance to take some fresh dry soil samples which I should have sorted a long time ago. If I can’t get to the post office myself I’ll see if I can print a prepaid postage label or give someone money and ask them to send it on their way past.

Quiz

15/20

rant and spoilerCan't believe it's slip slop slap, slide on some sunglasses? I didn't realise sunglasses were more important than hydration on a hot day. Guess you can all stop drinking water today then

Emoji has been changed because it's bird day!

My bird appreciation of the day is that dove that I thought was an owl (sorry bird peeps, I can't remember the sub-species or whatever the breed categorisation is called). It's been tricking me for YEARS into thinking it was some kind of broken owl. Cheeky bloody bugger

My favourite bird award goes to the magpie. Whatever sub-species we have in melbs. They can be aggressive, but they also have the capability of learning who is a friendly and doesn't need a swoop. They're remarkably smart for birds imo, and also fairly friendly once there's a bit of a rapport. Love ya maggies!

(Yeah, I know bird day mostly seems to be cantered towards the yanks. But we have some very fine birds, too, and they deserve a bit of love as well!)

My contribution to Bird Day is one of my most treasured Pokemon from Go. It was one of the first Shinys I caught.
