Like someone dropped a White Castle on top of an otherwise ordinary ranch-style house..

I love it. It’s funny, satiric, absurd. The man or family was very obviously aware this was absurd and did it anyways. He did it also for his kids and for a fun experience.

It’s the opposite of the kind of criticism you would level at McMansions, which is that they’re cheap displays of wealth that are excessive.

It reminds me of the shark in Oxford https://www.headington.org.uk/shark/

[-] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

I did not expect the shark to be positioned like that

[-] FracturedEel@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

That shark house is amazing

[-] merc@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 year ago

I like it.

McMansions are when someone tries to make a relatively cheap house look like a mansion. They take themselves seriously. This is obviously a fun addition, not something serious.

He gets a pass if he keeps adding on more castle bits until it's a full exterior including moat.

This is the opposite of a soulless display of wealth. It was built without regard to fashion, taste, or prestige, instead for love of family and personal creative desire. The fact that one of the kids it was built for still lives and works there says a lot to me. This is why I'm glad not everywhere is an HOA

Eh. Edmonton's full of actual McMansions. This is just a bungalow style house with a small amusement park dropped on top of it.

The homeowner should make it more authentic by installing a shit tower, and by ripping out the plumbing/electrical. Which will also make room for the all the mites and their faithful fleas.

Edit: a word

Catapult on the roof.

Dad: I want a house.

Family: We want a castle.

Dad: (creates this thing)

[-] Proofofnothing@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

I kind of love it. Like it is hideous but it is kinda cool too. Beats every other cookie cutter house.

Most of the time, I'm willing to leave these alone. People want to spend their money on houses that aren't my taste, sure, whatever.

But this? Ew. Ew ew ewwww.

[-] TheMightyCanuck@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Ayyy home town made it on McMansions 😎

[-] MooseGas@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

You're right. That isn't good. That is amazing.

[-] JJROKCZ@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Sadly, shit like this is why HOAs exist although I hate them vehemently

[-] LanternEverywhere@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Sorry but in no way does this justify the existence of an HOA.

[-] fresh@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

I will not complain about a house with actual personality in the suburbs. This isn’t my personal preference, but it’s delightful.

A Community about large, cheaply built, suburban homes with design flaws and a lack of architectural integrity also known as “McMansions.” On Thursdays we celebrate the opposite: good suburban architectural design.

Based off the famous subreddit r/mcmansionhell, we will essentially do all the same here, as is over there. Please do your best and crosspost if you need too!

We need mods!! Please please help!

A Short Guide

Friends at c/badrealestate!

Here are the rules:

  1. Posts can be about ugly houses in general
  2. Post appropriately and with correct tags WITHIN the title so it is easy to search. -->Tags: "Thursday Design Appreciation" or "HouseTDA", "Just Ugly", "Shitpost", "Certified McMansion™", "Discussion/Debate", and "Interior" are available.
  3. All post subjects must be single family homes -->Only post suburban, single family homes. No apartments or duplexes, etc. The community is focused on specifically traditional suburban architecture.
  4. Don't post addresses or other easily identifiable information unless it is publicly listed. -->Keep the information about the property you are posting basic and general. However, if the home is listed on a public website you are permitted to post a link to the public listing.
  5. Direct Images Only, no links please. -->Post correctly cropped, direct images and not links to websites. Image hosting links, such as Imgur, are an exception, but we still prefer a direct image. Zillow house page, for example, is ok if it directly links to the photos and such.
  6. No Spam -->No posting an excessive amount in a row on the same day or posting the same comment on several posts at once. We have seen it, we just didn't react to it. Please understand that.
  7. No Screenshots -->Crop your photos correctly.
  8. Thursday is special. To celebrate that, you can post nice houses you appreciate.
