It's interesting the difference in what people think a collapsed civilization will look like.
Some people think we will "return to monke" where wilderness survival skills will be essential and people who have them will be the "main characters." That would probably be the easier and better future.
The more likely option will be technofeudalism where rich people have small, brutal armies and control localized power grids, farming operations, and politics with tech as mass migrations happen and wildlife becomes all but extinct outside of human cultivation. Survival skills won't matter when all land and food scarcity is controlled by a rich few with absolute control. The average survivalist will be wiped out with the first natural disaster or by the feudal lords with drones. Return to nature might only come after 50 years when chip supplies and power grids have dried up and fallen apart, but it would just as likely be mad-max as oil could likely still be used.
Who knows. Fascism might take over with how it is going now and solve the climate crisis with mass genocide and forcing green energy for all we know.
You needed that much time before TV to travel the US because it was so large. With the information overload age, that is definitely not a problem anymore as everyone can see every rally and debate remotely
Compatibility and storage.
Do you want only 2 devices of the 10 your family possibly owns to work?
Do you want your family to complain that jellyfin "isn't as good as Netflix/Disney+/etc.." Because it constantly stops to buffer and a can't keep up the framerate?
It is completely fine if you are single and have 1-2 devices that work with AV1 and h.265 client side and that is all you need, then you don't have to bother with transcoding at all. When you start letting other people into it, compatibility becomes an issue.
As for storing it beforehand, the entire point of AV1 and HEVC is to significantly reduce the size on disk. If you have to store 10 versions or each file, 5 resolutions each, half h.264, then you are taking up about 20x the space per file compared to 1 copy of HEVC or AV1.
A transcode GPU like the A380 or new QSV compatible CPU is MUCH cheaper than a new good quality 12TB drive lol

For shit Comcast it is 1TB which is ridiculously low.
Then they also completely lie to your face about your metrics to make it look like you are always constantly almost at the 1TB cap.
My mom in America just had xfinity installed last fall at her house. She barely uses the internet besides web shopping, articles, and some Netflix. Every month she was somehow at 950-980GB. New WiFi password so there isn't an intrusion, her computer was fine, there is no way she is using that much. Comcast just lies to your face to higher data caps. Data caps for internet should be illegal as it is.

There is no such thing as a "read-only connector." Electrical signals can go down a wire both ways. It is up to the manufacturer of the chip to decide what pins are read and write, which is up to the governing body to regulate and restrict.
Not to mention that we are 10-20 years out from that kind of tech as development has been drastically slowing down in general. The best we can do as humans so far with the funds we put into this is stimulate general areas with current pulses to essentially cover up or stimulate the area's nervous response to relieve pain. We can't even accurately measure brain signals yet with fine enough detail to do much more than control a direction. Though that is coming along better.
The other applications close to this are for controlling muscles for sleep apnea, limb motor skills, heart muscles, etc... and are even "easier" to control.
If the tech becomes available to effect the video and audio brain receptors directly and is owned by corporations, you can bet your sweet ass they will make everything read/write and blast that thing so full of ads and harvest every bit of data they can to make a profit.

I will never buy an HP again after their printers (the ones that didn't die) start giving "missing printhead" errors after an update if it thinks you are using non-HP ink (even when you are using HP ink) and is unrepairable. Replacing the printhead is a 50/50 shot for 75% of the cost of a new printer
