So the guys who have been burning almost as much VC money as they have water and electricity in the name of building AGI have announced that they're totally gonna do it this time? Just a few more training runs man I swear this time we're totally gonna turn everyone into paperclips just let me have a few more runs.

Not gonna lie, "enforcing the line between ketchup and tomato sauce" isn't the sort of thing I'd expect the government to be into, but I guess I'm not mad about it?

Gotta be cheaper than buying new planes which would also have new engines. Generally there needs to be a pretty substantial increase in capability before it's worth retiring an existing platform, especially in a logistics role where you don't get as much benefit from the bleeding edge because nobody's supposed to be shooting at you in the first place.

I think the missing piece here is that B-52 isn't just a pretty good cargo hauler, it's a pretty good cargo hauler that we don't need to buy a whole new airframe to get. Think of it less as "we're commissioning these B-52s" and more as "hey look we found a way to use all these B-52s we already had" only this just keeps working forever.

I mean a lot of the services that companies are using are cloud-hosted, meaning that especially if you have branch offices or a lot of remote workers a normal firewall in the datacenter introduces an unnecessary bottleneck. Putting the logical edge of your organization's network in the cloud too makes sense from a performance perspective in that case, and then turning the actual firewalls into SaaS seems much less absurd.

Anyone remember when Chrome had that issue with validating nested URL-encoded characters? Anyone for John%%80%80 Doe?

So when Ukrainians try to push for closer alignment with the EU it's a Washington-backed color revolution and thus is no different than Russia rolling into the literal tanks.

Like, even if you're not a Russian troll you're still adopting a conspiracy theory that completely ignores any agency the Ukrainian people have.

Just keep smashing yourself into the bricks to "deny the wall legitimacy" or whatever. I'm sure it will work this time.

Note that the image here isn't from the AI project, it's from actual Doom. Their own screenshots have weird glitches including a hit splat that looks like a butt in the image I've seen closest to this one.

And when they say they've "run the game" they do not mean that there was a playable version that was publicly compared to the original. Rather they released short video clips of alleged gameplay and had their evaluators try to identify if they were from the AI recreation or from actual Doom.

Even by the abysmal standards of generative AI projects this is a hell of a grift.

What exactly do you think the alternative is here? Not voting just surrenders what little power the electoral process does give you. Even if electoral politics aren't a meaningful way to advance your vision of a better country, this is still an opportunity, however small, to reduce the harm that will be done under a Trump presidency. Like, even if you don't expect Harris to meaningfully improve things (and there are a lot of areas where a former cop probably shouldn't be expected to), the alternative is someone who continues to actively promise to make those same areas even worse.

If the only options are supporting genocide or being a Russian asset

So about those Ukrainians. Or is genocide, like imperialism, only bad when America does it?

I dunno man. It's definitely getting repetitive, but when we know that there is a substantial Russian disinfo machine out there and support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine is such a consistent theme in these people AND Putin is one of the major beneficiaries of the general turn towards right-wing authoritarianism (because when our politicians say and do the same things it legitimizes those antidemocratic elements of his own regime), it's not an unfair connection to keep drawing.

The most compelling argument to not call them Russian troll farmers would be for them to simply stop saying all the things a Russian troll farmer would say.

Gee, I wonder if there were any major shake-ups in the Ukrainian government circa 2014 that could have explained this change in tune.

Ukraine wasn't able to join NATO because of active territorial disputes regarding Russia's 2014 illegal annexation of Crimea. The 2022 invasion and intervening Russian-backed fighting in Donestk and Luhansk were naked imperial land grabs trying to force Ukraine back into the Russian sphere of influence despite their democratic processes repeatedly trying to move towards the EU.

Or in simpler terms, imperialism is actually still bad when Russia does it and it's weird that you don't seem to understand that.
