We're the frog in the pot of water ..... they just turned up the heat and we don't care ... we won't do anything until we're boiled alive, but by then, it'll be too late.

I think the main reason why she invited them into her home is because she is a lawyer and that she told them they were being filmed. She would be one of the few people who would take the risk to invite police into her home to get them to speak on recorded video about why they were at her home. If anything else had happened and they used force or tried to arrest her, she knew full well that she would have a huge case against them in court after the fact.

She knew what she was doing which is why she did what she did. Personally, you are right, I would have never allowed them in or even on my property from the start .... because I am not a lawyer and I don't know what I can or can't get away with.

This woman is unbelievable and she has all my respect and appreciation. She invited these doorknobs into her home, filmed them acting like complete goons stepping on a citizens rights and now the entire world knows about it. Good for her.

That's the thing .... if it were threats of death or violence, then the police would have said so and formally charged her with something.

Instead, they just go knocking on her door to ask her to stop saying bad things online.

The police have far more serious matters to deal with than to spend an hour or two to go visit someone's home to ask them to stop saying disagreeable things online about a foreign government.

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 17 points 9 hours ago

Police are meant to inform people about breaking serious laws. We don't send the police to intimidate someone because they said something bad about a different country.

Plus ... if someone has a disagreement about a political opponent ... then debate online ... if that doesn't work, complain to the business, complain to their company, complain to the social media company that is hosting the messages.

We don't jump to the nuclear option and ask the local police to go knocking on people's doors.

If that were the case, I'd like to ask the local police to a visit a few people that made me feel bad.

BACKGROUND

Joanna Berry is a Canadian immigration and refugee lawyer in Ontario, Canada. On October 2, two Niagara Police Officers, one of them a sergeant detective, paid her a visit to her home. They told her they were there on behalf of the Ottawa Police Department because of her "personal social media." They begin to tell her that "10 lawyers who are of the Jewish faith" have filed a complaint with the police about her social media. As you can tell from the video, Joanna Berry, is outraged by the visit and clearly distraught. I reached out to the Niagara Regional Police for comment but they did not respond to my inquiry. I spoke with Joanna Berry also and she gave OTL Media permission to publish the video. She told us that she wants Canadians to see it and for the video to be a warning.

For everyone's information, I support our Liberal government and I do support any of our current governments (even if I disagree with them politically) because I still believe in the rule of law everywhere. I don't subscribe to wild conspiracy theories about any democratically elected government.

However, I still hold that we should always be ready to question and hold our government, police and those in power accountable for everything they say, do or on how they direct those under them.

The actions of these police is a step too far in intimidating someone with personal views. As she explained, those who disagree with her views should speak to their company, talk to the social media company or speak to other authorities .... you don't go straight to the police to ask them to intimidate a political opponent.

We have to stand up to this level of bullying and intimidation. This isn't Canada. This isn't what I support. This isn't our government and this is not representative of our country.

At this point in history ... the only legimate way to be a Christian is to just say you're one. It's about the only criteria anyone goes by now.

It used to mean something a hundred years ago ... it doesn't mean much any more

Beautiful work .... I really don't mind the long wait between releases ... the previous Gimp 2.0 versions were so robust and practical that they have lasted for close to 20 years

In the early 2000s, I started off with cracked version of photoshop before I discovered GIMP and as soon as I did, I stuck with them since. They've saved me several thousand dollars in software costs over the past 20 years that I really don't mind waiting for the latest major release.

They can take their time releasing 3.0 for all I care. I'm still using 2.10 and I probably will for the next long while until 3.0 becomes stable. They've done a mountainous amount of work already and I congratulate them on everything.

This makes me realize too that I should probably donate something to their community for all the money they've saved me over the years.

Polar Bear on the Hudson Bay coast in northern Ontario.

I'm Indigenous and I've gone hunting and trapping with my relatives a few times in my life. On one of those trips we happened on a polar bear on the mud flats of the bay during the late autumn. We drove by in our freighter canoe (a very large oversized canoe with a 60 HP outboard motor) and the bear swam near us and then walked by a few hundred feet away. It wasn't afraid but we were. We watched for a while and then fired rifle shot into the mud next to it to scare it away. From the moment it started to run to the point it disappeared as a speck on the horizon was about a minute or two. I went up later to look at the prints and the clay mud looked like a tractor had driven over it. I couldn't believe how fast it could move on the mud. I quickly sank in my boots and could barely walk around.

One paw print was about the size of my head. I never left camp without someone nearby or a rifle in my hands.

I can blame the parent for bad parenting and call myself informed and everyone else should be ... because I know about bats carrying rabies

But I also know that most people have no clue that any of this can happen .... it's the first case of someone dying from rabies in Ontario from an infection that originated in Ontario since 1967 .... people have no clue that this is even possible in this day in age

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/rabies-death-1.7341335

About eight or ten years ago I woke up one night in my cottage to a bat flying around my place. It was dark inside and I saw this thing fluttering around in my room. I opened a window and let it out and never thought anything of it. About a year later, I happened to be reading some stuff about rabies .... the hair in the back of my neck went up and it's freaked me out since.

After that bat in my room, I never went for treatment, I never got checked out and I never thought anything of it. It's been about ten years and I keep worrying that some day I'll start feeling the effects of it. I think most people in Ontario would do the same because everyone thinks we got rid of rabies decades ago or that it is a third world disease that isn't possible here.

I feel terrible for that parent .... death from rabies is a horrible way to die and it happened to this child with their parents watching it all happen.

I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy ... let alone someone I would accuse of bad parenting.

The problem is not what he is lying about this time

The problem is news services like NYT trying to normalize and accept that someone like Turnip should be presented as a sane public figure that has something to say.

I thought I should take the responsibility to post this and remind everyone about what today is.

National Day For Truth And Reconciliation

Both my parents are survivors of the residential school era and my family have had to live with this horror all our lives ... whether we knew it or not.

For me the day is not to shame anyone or lay blame on those around me.

But rather to let everyone know about this history and never allow anything like it to ever happen again.

Every phone call you make with just the mic near your mouth and the speaker near your ear, you are whispering into the ear of the person you are calling.

If the person who answers with the mic near their mouth and the speaker near their ear is doing the same thing. It's like having a conversational 69 where both of you are placing your mouths next to each other's ears.

It sounds sexual and sensual if you are talking to someone you might be interested in ... but it gets a bit awkward if you imagine doing this with a random stranger you would never usually want to get close to.

I didn't see it posted so I thought I should.

I'm Indigenous, full blooded Ojibway/Cree from northern Ontario. Both my parents survived the residential school system in the 50s and I attended the last vestiges of Christianized schooling when I was growing up. We saw a lot of discrimination against us in my family and we were always made to feel less than every other Canadian we ever knew.

Even with all that ..... my dad always enjoyed celebrating this holiday because he just thought it was fun and a good time to celebrate with family and friends. Maybe he just didn't know but whenever this time of year comes around, all I can think of is how much he enjoyed just having a bit of fun today in the middle of summer.

In my own experience, I've travelled the world to 34 countries so I got see and compare how our country compares to the rest of the world. With all its shortcomings and blemishes .... this is still a great country and a prime example of decent democracy. It isn't perfect and it is very problematic and unequal in many ways ... but its on the top of the pile of mostly or more democratic places on the planet. I may be wrong on that but that is just my opinion.

So with all that said .... to all my Native, non-Native, nation born, immigrant, brown, white, black, and every shade in between ....

Happy Canada Day to all of you.

This is one of best commentaries I've heard recently about indigenous fraud. I've stopped referring to it as "Pretendians" because this isn't a cute joke, this is serious fraud and can sometimes add up to tens, hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars worth of lifelong fraud.

At first I watched this woman's video as a laugh because I watch lots of indigenous video blogs. At first I thought she was messing around but soon realized she was completely serious ..... as she was doing her hair and makeup.

Everytime I look at small problems or big global problems, if you follow the money trail, it all leads to some billionaire who is either working towards increasing their wealth or protecting their wealth from decreasing.

Everything from politics, climate change, workers rights, democratic government, technology, land rights, human rights can all be rendered down to people fighting another group of people who defend the rights of a billionaire to keep their wealth or to expand their control.

If humanity got rid of or outlawed the notion of any one individual owning far too much money than they could ever possibly spend in a lifetime, we could free up so much wealth and energy to do other things like save ourselves from climate change.

I'm in Ontario and this past week I got a couple of messages from family and friends in southern Ontario that their sons/nephews/friends who are in the army are going to be sent to either Poland or Ukraine in the next few months.

It's really upset myself and my family because I have relatives who were war veterans who either died or were traumatized by war (in WWII and WWI). Most of my family and circle of friends all agree .... no one in Canada should be sent to any war / conflict / fight / aggression / whatever you want to call it in Europe.

One of them said that they were going to be deployed to Poland but then that recently got changed to Ukraine. The messages about this one soldier came from a mother who is a friend of mine. She said that her son told her that it would be a combat role for him.

I am not certain if the young son is making up stories for his mother (as they have a difficult relationship). I'm partly wondering if the young guy is doing some strange path of going to Ukraine just to fight in whatever capacity (whether as a Canadian soldier or just a plain mercenary) just because he wants to.

So after hearing two separate families suggesting that they thought their relative was going to be sent to Poland or Ukraine in the next few months ... is Canada sending ... or going to send troops to Poland or Ukraine? Or is this something that their families have to worry about because some dumb kid is wanting to join a war on his own?

Christian Nationalism is a movement that affects us here in Canada just much as in the United States. This documentary highlights how that movement is affecting global politics at the highest levels.

Praying for Armageddon is a documentary film by Tonje Hessen Schei.

Praying for Armageddon is a political thriller that investigates the dangerous consequences of the fusion between Evangelical Christianity and American politics. Through years of reporting, this film not only reveals how structures of fundamentalism weaken the very fabric of American democracy, but also highlights the devastating impact religion wields on U.S. foreign policy. From a grassroots foundation and megachurch empires to the dark backroom maneuvering in Washington D.C., this film ventures inside a movement that ultimately aims to destroy our civilization. This deep dive into power and policy unveils how politicians driven by faith embrace Israel as the key to their prophetic vision for the end of days, at any cost, ultimately escalating the spirals of violence in the Middle East. As Intercept journalist Lee Fang says, “We cannot look away.”
