Who taught you that? Remember, economists funded by rich people have obvious biases... And what happens if our salaries and pensions are indexed to the cost of living? Is the reasoning still good?

[-] orcrist@lemm.ee 0 points 12 hours ago

That is statistically unlikely. Millions of people live in that region. Surely a few are happy with the violence, for a variety of sick reasons.

Best behavior is subjective. Talking less is usually smart, but some people mistakenly believe it's good behavior.

(Which is to say, the above comment has good advice, but it's not universally reliable. Use your own judgment or pay a lawyer if your judgment sucks.)

What a dreadful article. If you're not in a swing state, and you're in the minority, and you have been for the last 70 years, why do you think anything is going to change this time? Your vote never made a difference before and it almost certainly won't this time, either. Vote for whoever you want to vote for.

It's just embarrassing to write an article like this and forget about the electoral college.

I think that Hillary Clinton showed us the opposite. If the Democratic candidate goes too close to the center, they risk losing the left, and they deserve to lose the left at that point. If the Democrats had tried to put a halfway decent strategy together about Israel, there would be zero worry about a third party. And I don't like single issue voters, but if I had to pick a single issue, genocide would be at the top of the list.

Hillary was a terrible candidate. She lost because of that.

Don't have a hissy fit about someone else's emotions. It's just a comment.

Please don't deflect.

I don't know anyone who is laser focused. But anyway, do you think important historical events exist? If so, what are your top ten of the last half century?

Don't assume. But even if it were magically possible for all jail buildings to be safe from wind and water, what happens when an inmate has a heart attack? Can they go to the ER, or will they die?

If inmates die, will the bosses be thrown in prison? That is the simple test. If they believe their forts are secure, they will take responsibility in advance... But of course they didn't. They never will. Prisoners have no value to them.

The last study I saw indicated that the majority of drivers in the United States are breaking the law every single day they drive. We also know that cops in many areas are incredibly racist about who they pull over. I know you didn't intend it, but the effective interpretation of your advice is to be lucky and white.

In theory, or with systemic changes, it would be possible to come up with more equal enforcement of the law. Safer enforcement of the law, where the cops are less likely to shoot you. But that's not what we face right now. For example, can you imagine if people had the size of their speeding ticket determined by their net worth, or their annual income? Can you imagine a future where if a cop pulls over minorities disproportionately, the cop get arrested?

Let me make it easier. Can you imagine a future where traffic stops are not allowed to be pretextual? Can you imagine a future where cops are ticketed every time they break traffic laws? When you can get to any of these futures, then I think you can reasonably bring up the point that you tried to bring up above. Until then, it just doesn't match reality.

Can you think of any titles from real journal articles or essays that are eye-catching?

I'm writing a document for high school students taking an English writing class, and rather than create my own examples, why not use real ones? Several of my students have expressed frustration, and I have some guidelines and brainstorming tools, but what I don't have are two dozen neat examples.
