sometimes people call those as criminals who run a business in personal data. I can't fault them for it

does the addon support usage like that?

[-] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 10 points 18 hours ago

they do. that's the definition of sideloading. or why do you think the opposite?

with xiaomi phones, unlocking the bootloader is not as simple as running fastboot oem unlock or such from a PC. The reason for that is that manufacturers get to decide how to implement those fastboot commands, and xiaomi decided to restrict it quite a lot.

my last experience was that to toggle on the switch on the phone that makes unlocking possible, you need

  • a xiaomi account
  • a SIM card in the phone that can send SMS
  • unfiltered internet connection (more precisely it will want to connect to a specific xiaomi domain)

then, you need to install the xiaomi unlocker tool on a windows PC, log in with the same xiaomi account as on the phone, connect the phone over USB, start the unlock process, wait like 2 weeks, and finish the unlock process with the same tool.

the unlock tool most probably just retrieves a secret code from xiaomi and passes that to fastboot, but you can't really get around it afaik, unless you want to risk rooting it through a vulnerability, which will still leave it locked

with graphene you can't backup everything. for that you will need to root it, and graphene devs are vehemently against that

I download it with yt-dlp and watch it with a video player. that way they don't know at what pace do I watch it (when do I rewind and pause, or speed up).

or grayjay when I remember that it exists.
other options for me include FreeTube and NewPipe

Basically I'm saying wrap your car in tinfoil

and don't ever let diagnostic tools with network access be connected to it. just as well could say never bring it to service, which is not really possible

Everything supports https today, I think that wasn't a question

[-] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 2 points 4 days ago

ok but such a sensational announcement like this suggests that before (and without) gpu acceleration the program was noticeably slow for some reason

I think a big part of the problem is that they didn't show anyone a notification or an onboarding dialog or whatever about this feature, when it got introduced.

Firefox is still the superior browser in my opinion.

or the least bad, as I have been thinking about it lately

I have just installed the tmuxinator 3.0.5 ruby gem with gem 3.2.5 and the --user-install parameter, and to my surprise the gem was installed to ~/.gem/ruby/2.7.0/bin/.

Is this a misconfiguration? Will it bite me in the future? I had a quick look at the environment and haven't found a variable that could have done this. Or did I just misunderstand something? I assume that the version of gem goes in tandem with the version of ruby, at least regarding the major version number, but I might be wrong, as I'm not familiar with it.

I have checked the version of gem by running gem --version. This is on a Debian Bullseye based distribution.
