Summary

President Joe Biden invoked the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to protect 625 million acres of U.S. offshore waters from future oil and gas drilling, blocking areas along the East and West coasts, Eastern Gulf of Mexico, and Alaska's North Bering Sea.

The move aims to prevent environmental damage and hinder Donald Trump’s plans to expand fossil fuel production upon returning to office.

Trump allies and the oil industry criticized the decision as politically motivated, while Biden emphasized bipartisan support for protecting coastal regions.

That'll do it. There's no way Trump would ever disregard a law.

Congress would have to pass a bill and I don't see why they wouldn't.

Were they just planning to win? Feels like he did nothing for 4 years and just in these last 3 months he's actually trying to push through policy changes.

[-] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

I think they were planning to win with Republican support.

Biden did a good amount of work, but wasn't the best at advertising it. He was always sort of center right, but Republicans really are his lunch the few times he did speak up about anything progressive he was trying.

We've been on a mad dash to the right ever since Reagan. Any attempt at stopping that momentum is going to look a little pale in comparison.

Anything Biden can do with the stroke of a pen, Trump can undo, right? I'm all for it, but I really don't feel like things are as protected as these articles imply.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 39 points 1 day ago

This particular law allows the president to designate protected areas, but doesn't give them the authority to remove that designation. Trump would need either an act of Congress or the Supreme Court to take down the law as unconstitutional.

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 34 points 1 day ago

Supreme Court to take down the law as unconstitutional.

Oh I guess we're going with that one then. :(

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

This one is tricker to undo. But he’s an authoritarian and he has court that likes his authoritarian policies, so who knows.

[-] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago

Anything Biden can do with the stroke of a pen Trump can executive order and undo because he will be king.

SCOTUS has ruled that Trump is above the law.

[-] Natanael@slrpnk.net 10 points 1 day ago

Depends. If there's no preexisting law then yes, he can just cancel orders. But presidents aren't supposed to be able to override the law.

If there's a law and it has administrative requirements for revoking a particular status, then one president can order the agency administering it to consider putting something under that status, and the next one has to follow that same laws requirements on how to end that status - and it might not have a provision that next president can put to use.

But presidents aren't supposed to be able to override the law.

Official act.

It's only politically motivated when you use political affiliation to respond to it. "Leave it in the fucking ground already" is a scientific standpoint, not a political one. Fuck these goons.

[-] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Not only that, but I saw an article that Biden also, nearly in the same breath, approved a whole bunch of new offshore drilling elsewhere. So it's not even that we're not doing new drilling, we're just not doing as much as we possibly could.

[-] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

72 year old law doesn't sound as archaic when it's used by octogenrians. Isn't that well within their repetuar?

[-] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Lol, I don't know why my phone likes that spelling. Repertoire*

[-] Big_Boss_77@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 1 day ago

Sorry lol not poking fun... just saw that and had to re-read a few times because that was all my brain would put out

[-] dhork@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

With that headline, I expected Biden to go get an old volume of the Congressional Record out of the Archives and thwap Trump on the nose with it.

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Biden isn't doing shit tho...

Like, his aides have said, Chris Clizza even admitted it.

He shuffles around and his aides handle everything.

We could tell the last few years, but it's been a couple weeks now since people in his admin/party started admitting it. So it's weird to still see headlines pretending like Biden is actually doing anything besides his best Ronald Reagan impression.

[-] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

You just described delegation, one of the more critical leadership qualities one would hope to find in a president.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

You're not supposed to delegate everything.

[-] kreskin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

If he was going to delegate literally everything then what do we need a president for exactly? Lets cancel the office and save that money.

[-] Natanael@slrpnk.net 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

The president's role is to coordinate, which is heavily dependent on delegation. He's supposed to pick experts to help carry out the administration's policy. Are you expecting him to visit all 50 states every single day?

(OTOH yes the presidency has way too much power and it should be redistributed)

[-] kreskin@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

A presidents role is to also be accountable for whats done when he delegates. Also to lead the party direction. Not to suck off the right and give medals to neocons.

[-] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 0 points 19 hours ago

What do you think the president does other than communicate? Speaking and writing is the entire job.

[-] thefartographer@lemm.ee 8 points 1 day ago

Wow! What a slap! Fascism is dead now

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

He definitely SLAMMED trump.

[-] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

That's awesome, still doesn't make up for 2024 being a record breaking and world leading amount of crude oil production.

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems -4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Careful, people might start thinking you can teach Democrats to do better by making them l~~o~~ose.
